Candlewood Suites Will Build Hotel in Salem

The new property will be located at the intersection of Silverton Road and Fisher Road in Salem.

(SALEM, Ore.) - The parent company of Candlewood Suites hotels has announced this week that they will build a new hotel in Salem. A company representative says this will be the first Candlewood Suites property in this area. The extended-stay hotel is scheduled to break ground spring 2008.

“Candlewood Suites hotels are carefully designed to meet the particular needs of longer-staying guests,” said Gina LaBarre, vice president, Brand Management, Candlewood Suites.

5.2 Earthquake Shakes Eastern Russia

The quake was centered 250 miles SW of Anadyr', Russia.

(CHUKOTKA, Russia) - A magnitude 5.2 earthquake shook this morning in Chukotka, Russia.

The quake occurred at 12:39 AM PST, and had a depth of 6.2 miles.

No damage or injuries have been reported.

Memorial Day Events Scheduled Around Oregon

Originally known as Decoration Day, the holiday was later changed to Memorial Day and became a federal holiday in 1977 observed on the last Monday in May.

(SALEM, Ore. ) - Each year on Memorial Day, Americans pay honor to all of those who have died while serving in the U. S. Armed Forces.

Memorial Day originated in 1868, when Union General John A. Logan designated a day in which graves of Civil War soldiers would be decorated.

In recognition of this rich history, the Oregon Department of Veterans’ Affairs is announcing the Memorial Day celebrations occurring throughout the state of which the Department has been made aware.

Oregon Agricultural Sales Hit New High at $4.4 Billion

Of the 12 major agricultural commodity groups covered in the report, just one – dairy products – posted a decrease in gross sales from 2005 to 2006.

(CORVALLIS, Ore. ) - Agriculture in Oregon generated gross sales of $4.4 billion in 2006, setting an all-time sales record and logging a fourth straight year of sales growth.

The state's agricultural sector has experienced steady annual increases in sales since posting a figure of $3.48 billion in 2003.

Thirteen Oregon counties had more than $100 million in farm sales, led by Marion County, with $585 million.

Recall Issued for Nutra Nuggets Lamb Meal and Rice Formula Dry Dog Food in 40 Lb. Bags Due to Melamine Cross Contamination

(META, Mo.) - Diamond Pet Foods announced that it has recalled a limited quantity of Nutra Nuggets Lamb Meal and Rice Formula dry dog food in 40 lb. bags because of melamine cross contamination. To date, no animal deaths have been reported.

The recalled product was manufactured at the company's Lathrop, Calif. facility and sold through retailers in Arizona, California, Nevada, Oregon, Washington, and British Columbia, Canada. No other Nutra Nuggets products are affected.

(BAGHDAD, Iraq) - The body of Pfc. Joseph Anzack Jr., who was reported missing in Iraq for the second time in two months - has been discovered south of Baghdad.

After an intensive search involving thousands, Iraqi police say they found the body of a Western-looking man in the river in the Mussayab area, the "Triangle of Death." Joe Anzack's body had bullet wounds and signs of torture.

Suspect in Police Officer Shooting With Ties to Missing Oregon Couple Found Dead

A missing Oregon couple is known to have associated with the man in Arizona, and their location remains a mystery.

(QUARTZITE, Ariz.) - The suspect in a May 17th shooting of a Quartzite, Arizona police officer was found dead in the desert today, about twenty miles from the California border. Gregory Allen Cole who went by the nickname of "Groundhog", is also tied to the disappearance of an Oregon couple.

Cole was found dead off US Highway 95, according to AZcentral.com. The 45-year old suspect was located with an assault type rifle and police believe he shot himself.

Historic Vote to Update Bottle Bill Today

Senate Bill 707-B will be a special order of business when the House convenes Thursday.

(SALEM, Ore.) - When the House convenes today it will vote on SB 707-B—an update to Oregon’s landmark Bottle Bill.

Senate Bill 707-B will expand Oregon’s Bottle Bill by adding bottled water to the list of covered containers. It also creates a nine member Bottle Bill Task Force to study possible changes to Oregon’s current collection and redemption system.

Police Looking for Suspect in Lebanon Shooting

Detectives don’t think the incident was a random shooting.

(LEBANON, Ore. ) - Detectives in Lebanon are investigating a shooting that occurred Wednesday morning that sent a 38-year-old man to the hospital.
