NOAA Forecasters Predict Active Hurricane Season

The Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1st through November 30th, with peak activity occurring August through October.

(WASHINGTON, D.C.) - Experts at the NOAA Climate Prediction Center are projecting a 75 percent chance that the Atlantic Hurricane Season will be above normal this year—showing the ongoing active hurricane era remains strong.

With the start of the hurricane season upon us, NOAA recommends those in hurricane-prone regions to begin their preparation plans.

For the 2007 Atlantic hurricane season, NOAA scientists predict 13 to 17 named storms, with seven to 10 becoming hurricanes.

Salem Man Accidentally Shoots Himself in the Chest

No charges will be filed in this case.

(SALEM, Ore. ) - A Salem man is lucky to be alive today, after he accidentally shot himself while cleaning a handgun.

Salem police say 26-year-old Arturo Camarillo was cleaning his .22-caliber revolver at his home on 25th St NE when the gun fired, hitting him in the chest.

Camarillo was rushed to Salem Hospital, and is in fair condition.

Neighbors Help Police Catch Burglary Suspect

Drug usage may be a contributing factor to the arrest.

(SALEM, Ore. ) - The Marion County Sheriff’s Office is crediting neighbors for helping them catch a man who broke into a northeast Salem home Monday night.

At approximately 6:22 PM, Deputies responded to 4057 Beverly Ave NE, on a report of an unknown male breaking into a residence and physically assaulting the female homeowner.

The suspect then fled the residence and broke into a parked vehicle in the same neighborhood.

Kansas Town Devastated by Tornado, on Alert for Another

The National Weather Service has issued a hazardous weather outlook for today for portions of central, south central, west central, and southwest Kansas.

(WICHITA, Kansas) - The town of Greensburg, Kansas, that was completely destroyed earlier this month by a tornado, is on alert again today.

The National Weather Service says a strengthening area of low pressure will move into southwest Kansas by this afternoon. It is possible that isolated thunderstorms will develop along and ahead of a dryline.

Any thunderstorms that form in this area will be capable of producing very large hail, damaging winds, and even a few tornadoes.

Update: All Lanes of I-84 Westbound Now Open After Fatal Crash

Initial reports indicate two vehicles involved. Unknown length of closure.

(HOOD RIVER, Ore. ) - A fatal traffic crash reportedly involving a wrong way driver has closed all westbound lanes of Interstate 84 near milepost 67 between Hood River and Mosier.

Oregon State Police, Hood River County Sheriff's Office and local emergency responders on scene.

Westbound traffic is recommended to cross over into Washington at the Highway 197 bridge in The Dalles and use Highway 14 in Washington and then travel back into Oregon at the Hood River Bridge.

Car Plunges into Columbia River

Police think the car may have been stolen, and that the thieves intentionally drove the car into the river.

(PORTLAND, Ore. ) - At 11:53 PM, Portland Fire & Rescue was dispatched to 158th and NE Marine Dr. on the report of a car in the Columbia River.

A witness had seen the car drive off the side of the road, pause briefly on the walking path, then rev the motor and drive into the river.

The witness reported that he couldn't see the scene very well but didn't see anyone on the path after the car went into the water.

Senate Passes Budget to Put 100 More Troopers on Oregon Roads

Senate Bill 5533 will now move to the House for a floor vote.

(SALEM, Ore. ) - The Oregon Senate on Monday, passed Senate Bill 5533, the budget for the Oregon State Police.

The budget includes funding for an additional 100 new patrol troopers and increased funding for the Criminal Investigations and Forensics divisions, allowing the department to better combat identity theft, methamphetamine use and address DNA backlog issues.

Funding for State Police services has been in a steady decline, with trooper levels far below those seen in the 1980’s.

MySpace Will Expose Sexual Predators

MySpace initially took a stand over the attorney general's demand to hand the information over, citing federal privacy laws that prohibit release of personal data without a subpoena.

(SALEM, Ore.) - Pressure from the attorney generals of eight US states means MySpace will hand across information on sex offenders that the site has already tracked down and removed. It was announced Monday, that they would provide the information.

The US state justice officials, top prosecutors in their respective states, say the social networking site exposes its youth-oriented crowd to sexual predators that may be prowling Web in search of victims.

(SALEM, Ore. ) - Rep. Fred Girod (R-Lyons) on Monday led House Republicans in urging action on HB 2861, the bill to prohibit paroled sex offenders from residing in communities without 24/7 police protection.
