Eugene, Oregon Student Wins AAA Travel Challenge

The AAA Travel High School Challenge tests students’ knowledge of U.S. and world geography with a focus on travel and tourism.

(ORLANDO, Fla.) - Samuel Brandt, a 10th grade student at South Eugene High School in Eugene, Ore. used his considerable geography “smarts” on Monday – triumphing over an initial field of nearly 25,000 students – to earn a $20,000 college scholarship and the title of 2007 AAA Travel High School Challenge Champion.

Brandt won over a highly competitive field of students, correctly answering the following question during a nerve-wracking, single-elimination competition on stage at Universal Studios: ”Dubrovnik is a popular tourist destination in which country?” Answer: Croatia.

Oregon Guard Soldiers Prepare for Iraq Deployment

As these soldiers prepare for deployment, more than 800 Oregon Guardsmen are in the process of returning from a one-year deployment in Afghanistan.

(SALEM, Ore.) - The Oregon Army National Guard's 115th Mobile Public Affairs Detachment will be honored during a deployment ceremony on May 23rd at 11:00 AM at the Anderson Readiness Center on State Street in Salem.

Thatcher-Flores Join New National Immigration Reform Legislative Coalition

Local Republicans follow lead of Pennsylvania representative in fighting illegal immigration.

(SALEM, Ore.) - As Congress prepares to embark on a new plan to deal with illegal immigrants State Representative Kim Thatcher (R-Keizer, Newberg, St. Paul) and State Representative Linda Flores (R-Clackamas) announce they’ve joined a new national coalition on immigration reform.

It’s called “State Legislators for Legal Immigration” and it kicked off today in 25 states around the country founded by Pennsylvania State Representative Daryl Metcalfe (R-Butler County).

Casting Call Set for Salem Film Production

Main characters needed for casting include four males, aged 30-60 and one female, aged 20-30. There are a number of parts beyond that including non-speaking roles for adults and children.

(SALEM, Ore.) - Auditions will be held Saturday and Sunday, June 9th and 10th for the oddball comedy, "Uncle Bingo" by local filmmaker Chuck Magee.

Salem Police Offering Reward in West Salem Shooting

The Salem Police Department is offering a $1,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of the suspect in this case.

(SALEM, Ore.) - On March 27th, at about 9:00 PM, a 32-year old woman was shot in the abdomen during a robbery by an unknown suspect as she placed items into her vehicle in the 500 block of Gerth St NW in Salem.

The suspect, described as a white or hispanic male in his late teens to early 20s, 5'7" to 5'11" tall with a thin to medium build, is still at large.

Benton County Sheriff`s Office Begins Seatbelt Enforcement Blitz

Oregon ranks third nationwide for seatbelt use.

(CORVALLIS, Ore. ) - Starting Monday and running through Sunday, June 3rd, the Benton County Sheriff’s Office will participate in Oregon’s Three Flags Blitz, a statewide seatbelt enforcement blitz.

Three Flags Blitz will coincide with the nationwide “Click it or Ticket” mobilization promoted by U.S. Department of Transportation Traffic Safety Administration.

Patrol enforcement activities will focus on proper seatbelt use and minors in open pickup beds.

New Research Shows Parents of Students in High-Poverty Schools Value Teachers Who Raise Achievement

In more-affluent schools, parents prefer teachers who keep students satisfied.

(STANFORD, Calif. ) - When it comes to teachers, what do parents value most -- high student test scores or the ability to keep students satisfied? The answer depends in part on what kind of school you go to, according to a new study in the summer issue of Education Next.

According to economists Brian A. Jacob of the University of Michigan and Lars Lefgren of Brigham Young University, parents in high-poverty schools strongly value a teacher’s ability to raise student achievement and appear less concerned about student satisfaction. In more-affluent schools the results are reversed: parents most value a teacher’s ability to keep students happy.

Coast Guard Rescues Injured Fisherman off Oregon Coast

The man is recovering today at a North Bend area hospital from severe to moderate injuries.

(NORTH BEND, Ore. ) - The Coast Guard evacuated an injured man from a 280-foot fishing vessel 20 miles off the Oregon Coast near North Bend at approximately 5:00 PM Sunday.

The man was hoisted from the fish catcher/processor American Triumph, homeported in Seattle, after he suffered injuries and was rendered unconscious.

The crew of a Coast Guard Air Station North Bend HH-65C Dolphin helicopter was launched to assist.
