Be Aware! Gresham Road Work Could Hamper Your Commute

Traffic delays are expected as crews cut pavement and lay new water pipe.

(GRESHAM, Ore. ) - The City of Gresham will begin construction to install a new water main this week on Northeast Division Street between East Burnside and Southeast Hogan Place.

The purpose of the water construction project is to replace an 8-inch water line with a larger, 16-inch line to increase water flow in the area and provide better water service to homes, businesses and fire services in the eastern part of the city.

(SALEM, Ore. ) - Twenty-one middle and high school students were honored at the 13th annual Turnaround Achievement Awards held on May 16th at Willamette Lutheran Homes in Keizer.

The awards, sponsored by Town and Country Lanes in Keizer, are given to students who have made the effort to change their lives for the better.

Many of these students were struggling in school and were on the verge of dropping out when they decided to make a change and turn their lives around.

Study: Inmates Who Are Vets More Likely to be Sex Offenders

The study also found that Veterans are older, less likely to report drug abuse, and better educated than other State and Federal prisoners.

(WASHINGTON, D.C.) - There were an estimated 140,000 veterans held in state and federal prisons in 2004, the Justice Department’s Bureau of Justice Statistics announced Sunday.

State prisons held 127,500 of these veterans, and federal prisons held 12,500.

Veterans (23 percent) were twice as likely as non-veterans (9 percent) to have been sentenced for sexual assaults, including rape.

Aloha Man Dies After Car Crash and Gunshots

(ALOHA, Ore.) - The Washington County Sheriff's Office is investigating a car crash with gunshots involved that left one man dead. Sunday at around 1:30 AM, deputies responded to the intersection of SW 206th Avenue and SW Francis Street on a reported crash.

They found an orange 2000 Dodge Neon crashed in the middle of the road. Deputies found a man later identified as 27 year old Constantino Cruz from Aloha, sitting in the driver's seat with gunshot wounds.

Rescuers Preparing Herding Operation for Wayward Whales (VIDEO)

The whales, still lost up the Sacramento River channel 70 miles from the ocean, could be heading back to sea.

(WEST SACRAMENTO, Calif. ) - Training exercises will begin on Monday in preparation for herding two wayward humpback whales, Delta and Dawn, to the San Francisco Bay.

Attempts to coax the female whale and her calf using whale sounds will not resume Monday as previously planned, officials announced. They believe the whales may have turned inland from the ocean during their annual migration north.

Well, Septic System Class and Water Testing Offered

The class is free, but pre-registration is requested to ensure that adequate materials are available.

(CORVALLIS, Ore. ) - Two free community classes to help people take the mystery out of maintaining and managing their private wells and septic systems will be held this week, sponsored by the OSU Extension Well Water Program.

The class, called “Rural Living Basics: Well Water and Septic Tanks,” will be offered twice at the Corvallis Public Library – on either Tuesday, from 6:30 to 8:30 PM, or Wednesday, from 9:00 to 11:00 AM.

Class participants may also have their water screened for nitrates by bringing about a half a cup of untreated well water in a clean, water-tight container.

OSU Taking Applications for Middle-School Summer Science Camp

The application deadline is Friday, May 25th.

(CORVALLIS, Ore. ) - Oregon State University is taking applications for 48 scholarships to attend the ExxonMobil Bernard Harris Summer Science Camp for sixth through eighth graders this summer at OSU.

The two-week camp, which will be held Aug. 5th-17th, will offer innovative programs to enhance traditionally underrepresented middle school students’ knowledge in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM).

It also encourages students to stay in school and foster leadership and citizenship.

My Personal Tribute to Mental Health

May marks National Mental Health Month. Being blessed with the Sagittarius (Nov. 26) sign from the Zodiac, I decided to empty my imaginary quiver and aim arrows toward my patients' foremost problem issues. I targeted what has worked best over these last 30 years as a counselor practicing in New York, Metro DC and currently, Western Oregon.

(SALEM- Ore.) - One might term this brand of therapy as the confluence of Innovation and Motivation. My father's authoritarian attitudes largely shaped who I became. He was very strict and dogmatic, much like Capt. Von Trapp in "Sound of Music", but frequently quite irrational. My response was to retreat into my bedroom and create a comforting fantasy world to assuage my hurt feelings.

As my Father's Day present to society, I offer these techniques to those individuals and families who remain searching for stability and improved mental health:

Western Oregon Student from Alaska Critically Injured in Crash

Update at 4:00 PM. Lacey E. Dunn has been transferred from a Eugene Hospital to Oregon Health Sciences University in Portland.

(ELMIRA, Ore. ) - A Western Oregon University student from Alaska was critically injured early Sunday morning when the pickup she was a passenger in left drove off Territorial Highway about 1 1/2 miles north of Clear Lake Road and rolled numerous times.

19-year-old Lacey E. Dunn, age 19, from Ward Cove, Alaska, was transported by ambulance to Sacred Heart Hospital in Eugene. The driver received minor injuries.
