Whales Trapped in Northern California River Near Sacramento

USCG reports indicate that the whales are free swimming and headed in a northerly direction.

(RIO VISTA, Calif.) - The U.S. Coast Guard has received reports of whale sightings in the Sacramento River in vicinity of Rio Vista.

The Sacramento Bee Newspaper is reporting a pair of humpback whales appears to be trapped in the Sacramento River because of fishing gear or rope in the California waterway.

Television footage of the whales - believed to be a mother and her calf - show the two playing in the canal about two miles south of the Port of Sacramento.

Freight Trains Crash in Washington; Amtrak Service Cancelled till Thursday

Burlington Northern Santa Fe owns the tracks and was working to clear the derailment.

(DUPONT, Wash.) - Train tracks are closed today between Seattle and Portland after a freight train collision near DuPont, Washington.

The accident occurred at about 3:00 AM, knocking out power for the city of DuPont and closing the Old Nisqually Road on the east side of Interstate 5 near the Mounts Road exit near the Fort Lewis golf course.

Amtrak says the route is used by the Cascades and Coast Starlight trains. Service is expected to be unavailable until sometime Thursday.

State Urges Oregonians to Search for Unclaimed Property

$41 million was remitted to the state last year.

(SALEM) - More than 150,000 Oregonians had unclaimed property turned in to the Department of State Lands last year by businesses and organizations that were unable to locate them.

Each November, DSL receives reports from businesses and organizations; in 2006, over 10,000 reports with a value of $41 million were received.

This unclaimed property has been added to current unclaimed property holdings of $253 million for more than a million people.

Police Chase Ends in Arrest

Keizer's Kennedy Elementary School was placed in lock-down status while police searched for the suspect.

(Keizer, Ore.) - Keizer Police arrested a man after a pursuit that ended with the suspect vehicle abandoned near the Kennedy Elementary School. 45-year old Bryan Gilbert Ogden was taken into custody at 12:21 PM.

It began when Keizer Police officers were advised by state police troopers that they were in pursuit of a gold Honda Accord near their area, according to Keizer Police Captain Jeff Kuhns.

Kenworth Cement Truck Rolls Over Onto Hitchhiker on I-5 Onramp in Salem

Oregon State Police Spokesman Greg Hastings says the truck's load reportedly shifted as he rounded the onramp, causing the cement truck to roll onto its side.

(Salem, Ore.) - A hitchhiker escaped life-threatening injuries after he was hit by a cement truck that rolled while attempting to turn onto a southbound Interstate 5 on ramp from Brook Lake Road north of Salem.

It happened Tuesday at approximately 10:15 AM, when a 2007 Kenworth cement truck driven by 47-year old Scott Van Holland of Amity was eastbound on Brook Lake Road attempting to turn right onto the southbound Interstate 5.

Search for Missing Soldiers in Iraq Continues

The soldiers went missing after a convoy carrying seven U.S. soldiers and an Iraqi army interpreter was ambushed by enemy forces.

(BAGHDAD, Iraq) - Forces have been working around the clock since a pre-dawn attack May 12th that left one Iraqi and four U.S. soldiers dead and three other U.S. soldiers missing.

Assets has been brought to bear in the hunt for the missing troops, including search dogs, trucks with speakers, unmanned aerial vehicles, law enforcement advisers, and more troops.

State Receives Grant to Decrease Number of Oregonians in Institutions

In this second round of awards, Oregon is one of the 13 states and the District of Columbia to receive the demonstration grant.

(SALEM, Ore) - The federal Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services has awarded Oregon a five-year, $114 million grant to assist with the state's ongoing efforts to transition people from institutions to community-based care settings.

Since 1981 Oregon has led the nation in the development of lower cost alternatives to institutional care. Oregon ranks first nationally in the proportion of Medicaid long-term care expenditures made for home care and last among the states for institutionalized nursing care expenditures.
