Oregon to Begin Gypsy Moth Eradication Projects

Aerial spray projects planned for St. Helens and Bend.

(SALEM) - The latest battle in the war against the plant-eating gypsy moth in Oregon is about to begin this spring in St. Helens and Bend as the Oregon Department of Agriculture prepares to once again keep the invasive insect species from establishing in the state.

Hotshots to Train this Week on the Oregon Dunes

(FLORENCE, Ore.) - Each spring the Winema Interagency Hotshot Crew travels from their home base in Klamath Falls, Oregon to the Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area to get in some spring training in preparation for the coming fire season.

This year the crew of elite fire fighters will be on the coast during the week of April 23rd.

The Winema IHC will help with a planned fuels reduction project near the south jetty of the Siuslaw River.

USDA Narrows List of Individuals Whose Private Data was Exposed

The USDA will offer free credit monitoring for one year to people whose private identification information was exposed.

(WASHINGTON, D.C.) - The U.S. Department of Agriculture has narrowed to 63,000 the number of people whose private identification information was accessible to the public on a government-wide website and who will therefore be eligible to register for free credit monitoring services.

The 63,000 people were awarded funds through the Farm Service Agency (FSA) or USDA Rural Development (RD).

The USDA became aware of the potential exposure of such information on April 13th, when USDA was notified by a recipient of USDA funding that she was able to ascertain identifying information by viewing the website.

Governor Orders Flags at Half-Staff in Memory of Oregon Soldier

Flags to be lowered Monday, in honor of Private Brett A. Walton.

(SALEM) - Governor Kulongoski has ordered all flags at public institutions to be flown at half-staff on Monday, in memory of Private Brett A. Walton, of Hillsboro.

Walton, 37, died April 9th in Baghdad, Iraq.

He was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 17th Field Artillery Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 2nd Infantry Division in Fort Carson, Colorado.

Blue Angel Jet Crashes at South Carolina Air Show

The other five Blue Angel jets were not involved in the incident and landed safely moments later.

(BEAUFORT, S.C.) - An F/A-18A Hornet assigned to the Navy Flight Demonstration Squadron (Blue Angels) crashed during the final minutes of an air show at Marine Corps Air Station Beaufort, S.C., at approximately 4:00 PM EDT, on Saturday.

The pilot did not survive.

The pilot of the jet was joining the Delta formation for the final maneuver of the aerial demonstration when the mishap occurred.

Oregon Man Killed by Police After Taking Infant Hostage

The 11-month-old was not hurt in the incident.

(KLAMATH FALLS, Ore. ) - Klamath Falls police shot and killed a man Friday night after he had taken an 11-month-old infant hostage.

Police say 27-year-old Jesse Lee Johnson, told officers he was drunk and high on meth, and was going to kill the boy with a knife.

After negotiating with the man for about a half an hour, Johnson walked out of the home with a knife to the baby’s throat.

American Red Cross Willamette Chapter Celebrates 90 Year Anniversary

Volunteers and staff gathered to celebrate the American Red Cross Willamette Chapter’s 90th year of service in Marion and Polk Counties.

(SALEM) - Twenty three volunteers and three area businesses were specially honored, and an 8-minute video featuring local volunteers was shown at the event. The video briefly details the 1917 origins of the local Red Cross and moves to present day services.

Two AmeriCorps members were among the honorees. The AmeriCorps network of local, state, and national service programs engages more than 70,000 Americans in intensive service each year.

Ground Beef Recalled in Five Western States

Only products with a date code of 118-6 or 4/28/06 are subject to recall.

(WASHINGTON, D.C.) - Richwood Meat Co, Inc., a Merced, Calif., establishment, is voluntarily recalling approximately 107,943 pounds of frozen ground beef products because they may be contaminated with E. coli O157:H7.

The ground beef was produced on April 28th, 2006 and was sent to retail outlets in Arizona, California, Idaho, Oregon and Washington.

(SALEM) - A new video produced by the Oregon National Guard Public Affairs Office in Salem, captures the fast paced tempo of the State Military Department's last year of operation.

Master Sergeant Tom Hovie of the Oregon Guard produced the project that features video segments recorded by Tim King, during his time covering the war in Afghanistan over the winter of 2006/07.
