Oregon Governor Proclaims Former Prisoner of War Day

More than 90 percent of all former POWs since 1917 were captured and interned during World War II. During that same time, 85 women were also among those held prisoner.

(SALEM) - Governor Ted Kulongoski has signed a proclamation designating Monday, April 9th, as Former Prisoner of War (POW) Recognition Day in Oregon.

Since World War I, more than 142,000 Americans have been held captive by hostile powers. Many of these prisoners suffered extreme physical injury, mental and emotional trauma while they were interned.

(SALEM) - The scene was an afternoon public hearing this spring before a committee of the Oregon Legislature. The 50-ish man at the witness table was articulate and was dressed professionally. But his personal story of battling a gambling problem was one legislative committees don't often hear.

"I wasn't a person who was stealing your car stereos," he told the committee, "but that's where I was headed. Through treatment I got the tools necessary so I could get on my feet."

U.S. News & World Report names special education program no. 3 in the country.

(EUGENE) - University of Oregon graduate programs are among the best in the nation, according to U.S. News & World Report's 2008 edition of America's Best Graduate Schools.

The annual survey, available at newsstands now, ranks the College of Education's graduate program in special education as third best in the country.

Overall, the College of Education is ranked no. 12, up from no. 15 a year ago, placing it in the top five percent of all ranked schools.

OSU’s Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory has been assisting local veterinarians work up cases that fit the profile of the poisonings.

(CORVALLIS, Ore. ) - The national recall of pet food that is suspected of killing hundreds of dogs and cats around the country – and making numerous others ill – is a difficult puzzle to solve because there are not yet reliable tests for the suspected toxin in the food, and uncertainty even remains about what contaminant is responsible.

Scientists around the country are still trying to determine the exact cause of the poisoning and many suspect a toxin called aminopterin, according to Jerry Heidel, director of the Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory in Oregon State University’s College of Veterinary Medicine.

Eddie Robinson, Grambling State and Legendary College Football Coach Passes Away

(GRAMBLING, Louisiana ) - Surrounded by family and friends, former Grambling State University football coach, Eddie G. Robinson, Sr. passed Tuesday evening at Northern Louisiana Medical Center (formerly Lincoln General Hospital) in Ruston, Louisiana after a lengthy illness.

Robinson won 17 championships in his conference (SWAC), held the championship title 9 times for Black Colleges and creatively established a streak of 27 consecutive winning seasons 1960-86.

The documents are an important tool in helping to keep specific diseases from entering the state and in tracing back the source of infection should a disease outbreak occur.
