Volunteers Remove 54 Tons of Trash from Oregon Beaches

Volunteers removed an estimated 54 tons of trash from Oregon's coastline.

(NEWPORT, Ore. ) - On Saturday, more than 5,100 volunteers turned out to participate in the 22nd Great Oregon Spring Beach Cleanup.

The entire Oregon coastline, 362 miles, was cleaned of debris that had accumulated during the stormy winter months.

Many interesting items turned up, including a shopping cart, a washing machine, a refrigerator, a water heater, a pocket knife, a car seat, a Ford Bronco, more than 60 tires, and thousands of plastic bottles.

Man Walks Away From Crash After His Car Is Split in Half

The driver of the car that was cut in half was cited for Dangerous Left Turn.

(GRESHAM, Ore.) - Two men received minor injuries, including one who was able to walk away from his car after it split in half during a two-vehicle crash Monday morning on Highway 26 at Kelso Road.

SWAT Team Takes Escaped Inmate Into Custody Unconscious

Suspect apparently held a 70-year old hostage.

(WOODBURN, Ore.) - The Marion County SWAT team entered a Woodburn home just after 5:30 PM today after an hours-long standoff and found an escaped prison inmate named Arturo Salinas unconscious. Spokesman for the Sheriff's Office Kevin Rau says Salinas is being transported to Salem Hospital at this time. He had no apparent injuries.

It started around noon today when deputies were contacted by Hubbard PD and informed that Arturo Salinas, the inmate reported to have escaped from the Santiam Correctional Institution over the weekend, was holed up inside.

Senators to Offer County Payments Amendment Tomorrow

Multi-year renewal proposal includes nearly $5 billion for rural schools and communities nationwide.

(Washington, D.C.) - U.S. Senator Ron Wyden, joined by Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) and U.S. Senators Max Baucus (D-MT), Jeff Bingaman (D-NM) and others, will offer a multi-year proposal to restore funding for county payments as an amendment to the 2007 Emergency Supplemental Appropriations Bill tomorrow.

The Wyden-Reid-Baucus-Bingaman amendment, which was announced last week, includes about $5 billion for rural schools, counties and communities through 2012.

More details on the amendment, including details on the funding mechanism, will be available tomorrow. The Senators also hope to announce bipartisan cosponsors at that time.

DoD, Army Conclude Tillman`s Death Was Accidental

Tillman was a star NFL player who volunteered for his country after 9/11.

(WASHINGTON, D.C.) - Army Spc. Patrick D. Tillman was accidentally shot and killed by members of his divided Ranger unit after part of it had been ambushed by enemy fighters in a canyon in Afghanistan, senior Defense Department and Army officials told reporters here today.

An early unit-level report listed Tillman as being killed by hostile fire, acting DoD Inspector General Thomas Gimble told reporters at a Pentagon news conference.

However, findings of follow-on investigations showed that Tillman was the accidental victim of friendly fire, Gimble said. Yet, Tillman's parents weren't told that their son had died in that manner, he said, until a memorial service held weeks after his death.

Unknown Powder Substance Removed From Oregon Veteran`s Building

The powder substance will be turned over to the FBI for further testing.

(SALEM) - Oregon State Police say nobody was hurt today when an unknown substance was discovered in a letter on the first floor at the Oregon Veteran's Building in Salem.

The call came in at 11:20 AM. OSP's Greg Hastings says the powder will be analyzed, and "turned over to the FBI for further testing." He says no state employees were exposed and there was no evacuation to the building.

SWAT Team May Have Escaped Oregon Inmate Surrounded

Arturo Ramirez walked away from the Santiam Correctional Facility this week.

(WOODBURN, Ore.) - Deputies in Marion County have a house surrounded in Woodburn and they believe an escaped inmate from the Oregon prison system is inside.

Marion County Sheriff's Office Spokesman Kevin Rau says this could bring a manhunt to a close.

"The Marion County Interagency SWAT team is on scene at a home in the 11800 block of Carl Rd NE north of Woodburn where it is believed that Arturo Salinas, the inmate reported to have escaped from the Santiam Correctional Institution over the weekend,is holed up."

Keizer Family Loses Pet Ferrets, Rats in Three Alarm House Fire

The cause of the fire remains under investigation at this time.

(KEIZER, Ore. ) - The Keizer Fire District responded to the report of a house fire shortly after 6:00 PM on Sunday.

The fire caused extensive damage to a single family home located at 1351 Lawless St. NE in Keizer.

Upon arriving on the scene they reported that the garage was fully involved in fire with a large amount of flames coming from the back of the home.

Fire crews initially attacked the fire in the garage; their efforts were hampered by live electrical wires that were arching during their suppression efforts, but were able to knock down the flames quickly.

(NEWPORT, Ore.) - The arrival of spring, with low tides and potentially good harvest conditions along the Oregon coast, is expected to bring out eager clam diggers over the next few weeks, all the more reason for the Oregon Department of Agriculture to continue monitoring shellfish for marine toxins.

Currently, all beaches are open for recreational razor clamming. But that can always change over the course of the next few months.

Eating shellfish contaminated with low levels of domoic acid can cause minor illness within minutes to hours after consumption.

Eugene, Oregon Police Find Teen Girl Drowning in Bathtub During Underage Drinking Party

Police say they arrived just in time to save a young girl from drowning in a bathtub.

(EUGENE) - Eugene police say an underage drinking party in north Eugene could have turned deadly Friday night if officers hadn’t arrived when they did.

Police were called to a report of an out of control party, and when officers arrived at the home in the 4800 block of Spring Meadow Ave in north Eugene, they found several underage teens in the home drinking.
