NCAA Tournament: #3 Oregon Advances to Play #11 Winthrop

(SPOKANE, Wash. ) - #3 Oregon held off #14 Miami (Ohio) 58-56 in their first round Midwest Region game Friday afternoon in Spokane.

Oregon will now face #11 Winthrop who pulled off the morning upset by defeating the Notre Dame Fighting Irish, 74-64 on Sunday.

Oregon senior point guard Aaron Brooks hit two free throws with :21 seconds left. Marty Leunen added two more with :02 seconds left to preserve the victory for the Ducks.

Oregon Governor Signs Rainy Day Fund Legislation

Senate Minority Leader Ted Ferrioli of John Day argued it is unfair to build a reserve fund on the backs of already-struggling businesses in the state.

(SALEM, Ore.) - Delivering on a campaign promise, Gov. Ted Kulongoski signed legislation Friday creating a rainy-day fund aimed at stabilizing Oregon’s notoriously unpredictable cash flow and providing a cushion during the next economic downturn.

Proponents of the Democratic governor’s plan, including a broad coalition of business and industry leaders, said with tax revenues far exceeding expectations this year, a one-time suspension of Oregon’s so-called corporate kicker law is the prudent thing to do to help stave off the type of crippling cuts lawmakers made during the 2002-03 recession.

Deputies Trace Leak From Stolen Car to NE Salem Home

(SALEM, Ore.) - Marion County Deputies traced a fluid leak from a stolen car back to a home on Lancaster Dr. where they served a search warrant at about 11:30 this morning.

Marion County Sheriff's Office Spokesman Kevin Rau says police received a call just before 5:00 AM this morning from Brian Butler, a Prostar Security officer, who contacted the Sheriff's Office to report a suspicious car parked in the driveway of the Rockwood Park Apartments on Rockwood Park Pl NE in Salem.

Pair Arrested After Prowling South Salem Driveways

The rising price of gas may have led to the crime.

(SALEM) - Salem police arrested two men early Friday morning while they were prowling South Salem driveways.

The men were spotted by a home owner just after 4:30 AM peering into cars parked in a driveway at 2883 Miners Way SE police said.

An officer found the men about a block away, coming from another driveway.

Rep. Paul Holvey Rolls Out Field Burning Legislation

Legislation emphasizes protecting the health of Oregonians.

(SALEM, Ore.) - State Representative Paul Holvey (D-Eugene) stood up for the health of Oregonians today by rolling out House Bill 3000, a bill to prohibit field burning in Oregon.

HB 3000 protects public health by banning open-field, stack, and pile burning as well as propane flaming in Oregon. The bill transfers authority for managing the Smoke Management Program from the Oregon Department of Agriculture (ODA) to the Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ).

Fees and fines collected from burning and compliance will be placed into Open Burning Management Account that will be used to finance DEQ program costs.

Salem Man Arrested on Meth Charges

The man is one of several people taken into custody after a warrant was served at a home in NE Salem.

(SALEM, Ore.) - A long term investigation into a suspected meth house led to several arrests Wednesday. Marion County Sheriff's Office Lt. Bob Stai says detectives and the county SWAT team, with assistance from the Marion County Interagency Meth Strike Force, executed a search warrant at 4575 Satter Drive NE.

Investigators say they believed methamphetamine was being distributed from the location.

After entering the residence, SWAT members located what appeared to be precursor chemicals used in the making of methamphetamine.

Salmon License Plate Funds Open 16 Miles of Streams to Fish

(SALEM, Ore.) - Fish will return to 16 miles of streams and erosion will be reduced on 7.5 miles of road as a result of three projects restoring fish habitat and improving water quality with grant funding from more than $219,000 in salmon license plate revenues.

DEA Announces Major Heroin Seizure

DEA agents say they recovered approximately 16.2 pounds of heroin.

(SEATTLE, Wash.) - The Drug Enforcement Administration made what is believed to be the second largest single seizure of heroin in Oregon history Tuesday.

Special Agent in Charge Rodney Benson says agents with the DEA, in conjunction with the arrests of several dozen persons yesterday in Eugene and elsewhere, executed an additional search and arrest warrant late yesterday leading to the heroin bust.

During the course of the investigation and while rounding up over 30 individuals who were accused of being involved in the drug trafficking network, agents obtained additional information that led to a federal search warrant for a residence in Springfield, Oregon.

Benson says law enforcement officers arrested a 23-year old man on drug charges while searching the residence late Wednesday. They report the recovery of approximately 16.2 pounds of heroin that had been secreted in the house, along with almost $8,000 in U.S. currency.
