Salem, Oregon Newspaper`s Parent Company Takes Big Hit on Wall Street

Gannett Co., owner of Statesman Journal and USA Today, is the big loser. Other newspaper companies feel the heat.

(SALEM, Ore.) - A company notorious for saying "their stocks never drop" has taken a big hit on Wall Street. Gannett Co., owner of the Statesman Journal Newspaper in Salem, Oregon, as well as the Stayton and Silverton newspapers, is the biggest newspaper company in the world.

Their problems might be even bigger.

Forbes Magazine and The Associated Press report that newspaper publishers around the country are down on Gannett, a company that on Thursday, noted a significant decline in advertising revenue which fell 3.8 percent in February to $385 million, down from $400.4 million the February before.

Plane Parts Wash Onto Oregon Beach Following Fatal Crash off Coast

(LINCOLN CITY, Ore.) - Parts of a small plane's landing gear that washed onto Nelscott Beach in Lincoln City appear to be from a missing plane that departed the Siletz Bay Airport at Gleneden Beach between 8:30 and 10:30 Saturday morning.

Lincoln City Police were notified of the find at 3:05 PM by a person who found the plane's rear wheel assembly while walking on the beach.

Lincoln City police identified the pilot as 58-year-old Raymond Mullen, of Silverton and his passenger as 31-year-old Larry Underhill, 61, of Woodburn.

Woman Dies in Crash Near Bend

A total of five other vehicle occupants were transported by ground ambulance to St. Charles Medical Center in Bend reportedly with serious injuries.

(BEND, Ore.) - One woman died and six others were seriously injured Saturday afternoon in a head-on crash on Highway 20 about 6 miles west of Bend. All names are being withheld pending next of kin notifications, and the release may not happen until Sunday.

Missing Plane and Pilot Located by Civil Air Patrol

The pilot was recovered by Oregon Guard helicopter from the 1042nd Air Ambulance Group from Salem Saturday at about 8:00 AM.

(DIAMOND LAKE, Ore.) - A Klamath Falls pilot who crashed his Cessna 182 airplane late Friday night was found alive by Civil Air Patrol pilots. The group launches aircraft to aid in the search of missing pilots and planes.

Oregon's CAP Wing was alerted to the report of a downed Cessna 182 in Southern Oregon west of Diamond Lake after the pilot reported around 11:00 PM that he was low on fuel.

Communicating with the Seattle Air Center, the pilot was advised to set his transponder to a certain frequency. This device sends out a signal that can be read by search crews to determine the location of a missing plane or boat.

Salem Man Severely Beaten by Strangers in His Home

(SALEM, Ore.) - Salem police say a man was severely beaten in his home Thursday night after two strangers came to his door asking to use the phone.

57-year-old Ted Dawson who lives in the 1500 block of 20th Street SE was left unconscious after the incident and a neighbor did not discover him for almost twelve hours.

Police Lt. Chuck Bennett says the two people, a man and woman in their 20's, knocked on Dawson's door Thursday at 11:30 PM.

Polk County Deputy Survives Multiple Rollover Crash

Deputy Williams had a little luck of the Irish with him today.

(DALLAS, Ore. ) - A Polk county deputy sheriff was injured at 8:20 AM after his patrol vehicle rolled several times into a field after he took evasive action to avoid another vehicle on Hwy 99W near Orrs Corner Road, 2 miles south of Rickreall in Polk County.

Deputy John Williams, 42 years, was responding to a report of a reckless driver several miles ahead of him.

The deputy was dispatched to a report of a silver jeep Cherokee that reportedly was crossing the center line numerous times and had nearly hit a car head-on.

Solider Born and Raised in Oregon Killed in Iraq

He becomes the 74 military member from, or with ties to Oregon to die in Iraq or Afghanistan.

(La GRANDE, Ore. ) - Another solider with ties to Oregon has died in Iraq.

Army Sgt. 1st Class John S. Stephens died when an explosive device hit the command vehicle he was driving according to family members.

Stephens was born in Prineville, and raised in La Grande.
