Deadline Approaching to Claim Active Duty Military Property Tax Exemption in Oregon

Soldiers may file for exemption every year for which they qualify.

(SALEM) - If you're an active-duty soldier, April 2nd is the last day you may claim the active duty military service member's property tax exemption for the 2007-08 tax year.

If you are an active-duty soldier, you may qualify if you are an Oregon resident serving in the Oregon National Guard (Title 32), and ordered for the first time on or after January 1st, 2005 to service under Title 10.

You must serve for at least 179 consecutive days during the tax year for which you claim the exemption.

(SALEM) - Staying Awake while driving is always a good thing, but it may become a little harder to do beginning next week.

That because of Sunday’s time change to Daylight Savings Time, and for drivers and commuters it may not seem like a big deal, however it can present challenges.

“Drivers need to be aware they may not be as alert as they think they are when they get going in the morning and again in the evening,” said Walt McAllister with ODOT’s Safety Division.

Coast Guard Offering Oregon Commercial Fisherman Safety, Emergency Training

The fee for the workshop is $50.

(NEWPORT, Ore. ) - Commercial fishermen will have the opportunity to receive hands-on safety equipment and emergency drill training provided by the U. S. Coast Guard in association with Oregon Sea Grant.

The Coast Guard-approved Marine Safety and Survival Course is scheduled for March 8th-9th, in Newport.

Upon completion of the course, participants will receive certification to conduct emergency drills aboard commercial fishing vessels.

Police Investigating Armed Robbery in NE Salem

The suspect is described as a White male adult in his 20's, about 5'9" with a thin build and light brown hair.

(SALEM ) - Shortly before 10:30 PM Tuesday night deputies responded to the Little Ceasars Pizza Restaurant at 3278 Lancaster Dr NE in Salem on a report of an armed robbery.

17-year-old Coral Zapada, of Salem, was working in the restaurant when the man entered and demanded the money from the cash register.

At first Zapada had some difficulty opening the register and the man lifted his shirt showing what Zapada described as the handle of a semi-auto handgun.

Wyden Applauds Chairman’s Decision to Formally Ask for Review of Possible Hardwood Plywood Abuses

Senator Wyden has held multiple meetings with Administration officials to discuss the allegations made in his letter and to urge them to investigate and take action.

(WASHINGTON, D.C.) - U.S. Senator Ron Wyden of Oregon applauded Senate Finance Committee Chairman Max Baucus’ decision to formally request that the International Trade Commission (ITC) conduct a review of the U.S. hardwood plywood and wood flooring industry.

Nearly 2,000 Oregonians work in the hardwood plywood industry.

In late November 2006, Wyden sent letters to the U.S Trade Representative, the Secretary of Commerce, the Secretary of Homeland Security and the Customs and Border Protection Commissioner expressing his serious concerns regarding a number of Chinese hardwood plywood industry trade practices, which were relayed to him by members of the hardwood plywood industry and others.

(Salem--Earth Prime) - While some took it to be a joke or a prank, an unidentified flying object was sited over O'Hare airport in Chicago this past November. This was not a mysterious light, but a solid, disk-shaped structure.

During the scant minutes it was visible it was spotted by perhaps dozens of people and at least one pilot who should be trusted to recognize the type of craft usually landing at O'Hare.

When the object left it tore a hole in the cloud layer overhead. The FAA originally told reporters that it had no knowledge of the siting, but a Freedom of Information Act request filed by the Chicago Tribune showed that a United Airlines supervisor contacted an FAA manager at the airport about the phenomenon.

Men Rescued From Plane Crash by Salem Based Oregon Guard Helicopter

The two men were spotted late Monday night by the Guard crew in an OH-58 Kiowa who relayed their location to officials leading the search.

(ODELL LAKE) - Klamath County Sheriff Tim Evinger reports that two men were hoisted from the airplane crash scene at Odell Lake late Tuesday morning and have been transported by Oregon Army National Guard crews to St. Charles Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries. The men were recovered around 11:00 AM.

A helicopter crew from the Oregon Army National Guard conducted hoist extractions for both victims and took them to Saint Charles Medical Center in Bend. The two men are identified as 24-year old Justin Hall of Portland, and 21-year old Josh Stohr of Eugene.

UPDATE: One Lane Now Open on Highway 99E After Fatal Traffic Accident

(BROOKS) - The Oregon State Police is reporting that a fatal traffic accident has Highway 99E down to one lane south of Brooks.

OSP says the accident occurred on Highway 99E one-half-mile south of Brooks.

Initial reports say that at least two vehicles are involved in the accident, with one female died in the crash.

Bush Seeks $93.4 Billion for War in Iraq

According to documents released by the Defense Department, the supplemental request will provide $39.3 billion to sustain warfighting operations, including supplies, support and maintenance.

(WASHINGTON, D.C.) - There are no shortcuts in Iraq, President Bush told members of the American Legion here today.

During remarks, Bush said he is urging Congress to approve the defense budget request he submitted Feb. 5th, which includes a $93.4 billion emergency supplemental measure to cover the cost of operations in the war on terror for fiscal 2007.

Oregon, Nationwide Gas Prices Continue to Soar

Some analysts forecast that the Pacific Northwest average price for a gallon of regular gasoline could hit $3 by the end of March.

(SALEM) - The national average gas price rose another 12-cents in the past week to $2.49.

That's an increase of thirty-one and a half cents in the last month.

During the same time period, Oregon's statewide average price climbed nine cents to $2.61, an 18-cent per gallon gain in a month.

Over the past week, the average price for a gallon of regular unleaded rose 8-cents to $2.60 in the Salem-area.
