The Consequences of Love and Rules

What happens when the line of professionalism is crossed with the line of love? The answer is found when a prison official quits her job for the man she loves.

(SALEM) - Recently an acquaintance of mine broke some professional rules - the rules of conduct as a professional in the State of Oregon Corrections facility. She was someone I recently worked with on one of my shows, a person I found to be professional, a nice person, and a gentle person, as her name depicts – Fay Gentle.

Recent news stories revealed the consequences when the line of professionalism versus the line of love is crossed. The results are two lives turned upside down.

Sometimes the sound means an infantryman is approaching battle, while other times the deafening roar is the sound of rescue and evacuation.

These helicopters making an approach in an Afghanistan mountain valley carry combat troops that are on the move. This CH-47 Chinook was also my ride back to the Afghanistan capitol, Kabul.

Salem Police Department Seeking Victim Advocates

The program depends heavily on the support of volunteers.

(SALEM) - The Salem Police Department Domestic Violence Response Team is currently accepting applications for volunteer advocates.

Victim advocates strive to ease the impact of this devastating crime on the victim and provide intervention in an effort to break the cycle of violence.

Training is provided free of charge to applicants who successfully complete the screening process and interview.

Amphibian Airplane Makes Emergency Landing on Interstate 84 East of Baker City

The plane with a 48-foot wingspan made a safe landing on the freeway due to bad weather.

(BAKER CITY) - A 34-year Oregon State Police veteran thought he had seen it all until he saw an amphibian-style airplane in his rearview mirror after it made an emergency landing Sunday morning on Interstate 84 about fifteen miles east of Baker City due to poor weather conditions.

The plane was able to take off about three hours later with the assistance of Oregon State Police troopers and Oregon Department of Transportation personnel.

Controversial Punishment at Salem Private School Stirs Debate

The debate over who, where, and how a child is punished at home or at school will continue for centuries to come.

(SALEM) - The debate over how a child should be punished while at school is growing in Salem after a questionable form of punishment came to light on Friday in which the Principal at Queen of Peace Catholic School in south Salem was seen punishing students by using what some call child labor.

Two visitors to the school on Friday say they saw two kindergarteners, both boys, cleaning the base of a wall with a toothbrush.

OSU Students Attend Class Inside Oregon State Penitentiary

Portland State University and the University of Oregon are also participating in Inside-Out.

(SALEM) - A group of Oregon State University students taking a Public Policy course with men in the state’s only maximum-security prison are among the first on the West Coast to participate in The Inside-Out Prison Exchange Program, a national program based at Temple University in Philadelphia.

OSU’s Michelle Inderbitzin, an assistant professor in sociology, received an L.L. Stewart Faculty Development Award in 2005 to receive training in The Inside-Out Prison Exchange Program.

Her goal was to teach a class inside a prison that would include OSU students as well as incarcerated students.

Lottery, Kicker Money Proposed for OSP Funding

According to OSP estimates, $65 million per biennium could fund 280 additional troopers.

(SALEM) - Representative Kim Thatcher (R-Keizer) and several other legislators have developed new ways to put more state troopers on the road: setting aside lottery money and giving Oregonians a chance to donate their kicker check.

The OSP patrol division currently includes approximately 330 officers, down from more than 650 in the 1980’s when funding for troopers was removed from the state highway fund.

House Bill 2745 sets aside $65 million in lottery proceeds per biennium specifically for patrol deputies at OSP.

Police Searching for Missing Elderly Oregon Woman

Police are looking for a 1990 four door Honda Accord, teal in color, bearing Idaho license plates K332915.

(WILSONVILLE) - The Clackamas County Sheriff's Office is asking for the public's help help in attempting to locate a missing elderly female, who has been missing for more than 36 hours.

80-year-old Dena Delphine Kline, home address 28167 SW Sioux Terrace, Wilsonville, Oregon, was last seen in person at about 11:00 PM on Friday by Molalla Police, who stopped her as a possible drunk driver in the city of Molalla.

Her vehicle was last seen traveling north on Hwy 99E.

Oregon Rainy Day Fund Could Get Wall Street`s Attention

With Oregon's state coffers full from a buoyant economy and revenue forecasts no longer hemorrhaging red ink, Treasurer Randall Edwards says it is a good time to prepare Oregonians for future economic downturns.

(SALEM) - Oregon’s state treasurer, after years of stymie by economic downturn, is renewing calls to state lawmakers to approve legislation to create a rainy-day fund to hedge against future budget shortfalls, a move that analysts say could help to improve the state’s mediocre bond rating.

Eager to make Oregon paper more attractive to investors, state Treasurer Randall Edwards, a Democrat, wants lawmakers to divert nearly $300 million scheduled for return to C-corporations this year, and instead use the money to create a structural budget reserve.
