A brother-sister pair from Salem find themselves stationed together far from home.

(KABUL, Afghanistan) - They may have had their battles while growing up in Oregon, but brother and sister Jay and Heather Louisiana never thought they would end up in a war zone together, in the same unit, at the same base - in Afghanistan.

They live at a mountain base where soldiers are a tight knit combat group. They say having a family support network on the base helps during the hard times.

Suspect Arrested in Southern Oregon for Attempted Aggravated Murder in Police Shooting

Bail for the suspect was set at $1,000,000.

(JACKSONVILLE) - A number of agencies are investigating a Tuesday night shooting involving a Jacksonville-area man and a Jacksonville police sergeant during an attempt to elude in rural Jackson County.

No one was injured and the suspect is in custody on multiple charges including one count of Attempted Aggravated Murder.

Tuesday at approximately 11:00 PM, Jacksonville Police Sergeant Dan Moore attempted to stop a vehicle in Jacksonville for disobeying stop sign and speed violations.

Officials Offer No Excuses, Only Changes at Walter Reed

Oregon Revenue Field Office in Salem Provides Tax Help

Taxpayers are served on a first come, first served basis.

(SALEM) - The Oregon Department of Revenue's Salem Field Office is offering a free AARP-sponsored Tax-Aide session every Wednesday through April 11th, from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM.

Salem field office manager Vicki Abraham says a volunteer preparer will help taxpayers fill out and file their tax returns, "This is just part of our effort to provide the best possible customer service to Oregon taxpayers."

Polk Inmate Walks Away From Work Program

The inmate is not considered dangerous to the public.

(DALLAS) - A sentenced inmate escaped from custody in Polk County this morning at approximately 8:00 AM. 19-year old Vencen Emerald Page ran on foot after being released from the jail facility and transferred to the inmate work release supervisor.

Page was serving 120 days on a probation violation for the manufacture and delivery of a controlled substance. He was scheduled for release on 04/09/2007.

(CORVALLIS) - A study being published this week suggests that gas and vapor movement to the top of the magma body may have caused fairly rapid increases in pressure and could have been the triggering mechanism that caused Mount St. Helens to erupt in both 1980 and 2004.

New Analysis Finds Oregon Hit Hard by Cuts in President’s Budget for 2008

(SILVERTON) - Oregon would lose $123 million in federal funding next year for a wide range of public structures, including K-12 education and Head Start, under the President’s budget for 2008 according to a report released today by the Washington, DC-based Center on Budget and Policy Priorities.

The funding cuts, scheduled to deepen in future years under the President’s proposal, would force Oregon to either raise taxes to compensate for the lost federal funds, or reduce basic public services.

Oregon House Approves Constitutional Change to Voting Age

Amendment would eliminate outdated requirement for voting in school board elections.

(SALEM) - The Oregon House of Representatives has approved a change to Oregon’s constitution that would eliminate anachronistic age and literacy requirements for citizens who vote in school board elections.

While it is unclear whether those provisions could be enforced, they have not been in recent years.

The resolution, HJR 4, would explicitly remove that text from the constitution.
