Kulongoski Rallies for Increased Funding for Higher Education

Kulongoski urged the legislature to raise the corporate minimum income tax and pass his education budget.

(SALEM) - Governor Kulongoski addressed students, faculty, administrators and staff of Oregon’s seven universities and seventeen community colleges on Thursday, and asked for their help to pass his higher education budget, and to raise the state’s corporate minimum income tax to expand financial aid and the Oregon Opportunity Grant.

The Governor told the crowd that his 2007-2009 budget begins to reverse the years of disinvestment in post-secondary education, starting with a 17% increase for community colleges and 15% increase for public universities.

Polk County POINT Team Makes Arrests

The POINT Team is the Polk County Interagency Narcotics Team.

(MONMOUTH) - A month long investigation involving the sales of methamphetamine led to two arrests in Polk County Wednesday.

The Polk County Interagency Narcotics Team, assisted by the Monmouth Police Department and the Polk County Sheriff's Office, served a search warrant on an apartment located at 287 S Monmouth Ave #8 in Monmouth.

Troy Williams, the resident of the apartment, was arrested and charged with Unlawful Delivery of Methamphetamine, Unlawful Delivery of Methamphetamine within 1000 feet of a School and Unlawful Possession of Methamphetamine.

Oregon`s Fire-Safer Cigarette Legislation Passes House

The bill now goes to the Senate.

(SALEM) - The Oregon House of Representatives voted Thursday to unanimously approve House Bill 2163-A, which requires only fire-safe cigarettes to be sold in Oregon.

If the bill becomes law, Oregon would join New York, Vermont, California, Illinois, New Hampshire, Massachusetts and Canada in requiring the sale of only fire-safer cigarettes.

Salem Man Arrested in Connection With Florence Boatwright Homicide

Darius Pittman pled not guilty to the murder charge against him on Friday.

(SALEM, Ore.) - A 23-year old Salem man has been charged with murder and burglary in connection with the death of Salem resident Florence Boatwright.

The Marion County Sheriff's Office say they have charged Darius Pittman with the homicide that occurred at 403 45th Ave SE in Salem Tuesday, November 28th. It was reported at about 3:30 AM.

An arraignment on those charges is set for 8:30 AM tomorrow, Friday, February 23rd.

Salem Police Seek Information on Sentenced Sex Offender

(SALEM) - Salem Police are seeking possible additional victims in a sex offender case dating back to 2001.

Police Spokesman Bill Kohlmeyer says officers arrested 30-year old Joshua N. Shewell of Salem for sexual crimes involving a child.

Shewell was arrested in January, and pled guilty in Marion County Circuit Court to two counts of Sex Abuse 1 and one count of Sodomy 1 on February 7th. He was sentenced to 75 months in prison.

Western Oregon University Welcomes the Oregon Academy of Science

The OAS meeting will begin Saturday at 7:00 AM with registration at Werner University Center.

(MONMOUTH) - Western Oregon University will host the 65th annual meeting of the Oregon Academy of Science on Saturday, February 24, 2007. The OAS promotes science education and scientific research within the state. The academy's thirteen sections work to encourage communication among Oregon scientists, both private and public and fosters the growth of tomorrow's scientists through the junior academy for high school students.

Bill Gates Restricts his Child from Using Internet

The king of computers places strong limits on the amount of time his daughter spends Web surfing.

(SEATTLE) - The King of software Bill Gates has revealed that his oldest daughter who is 10 years old, can't use her Personal Computer more than 45 minutes per day.

Of course the time for studying is not included.

The news is curious but insiders say it's a really important message, above all because it was stated directly by Bill Gates, the man that grew up eating sandwiches and computers that is now the richest man of the world.

Unknown Powder Substance Found in Mail Removed from Oregon`s Veteran`s Building

The powder substance was turned over to the FBI for further testing. Oregon State Police and FBI will be conducting further investigation.

(SALEM) - An unknown powder substance found Thursday morning in a letter received on the third floor at the Oregon Veteran's Building in Salem has been turned over to the FBI for further testing. No state employees were exposed and the building was not evacuated.

Around 9:30 AM Thursday, an employee of the Construction Contractors Board working on the third floor at the Oregon Veteran's Building, 700 Summer Street, opened an envelope containing a letter and an unknown powder substance contained in a plastic baggie.

Misused Water Bed Heater Causes Structure Fire in Salem

The cause of the fire was determined to be a misuse of a water bed heater that was being used on a regular mattress.

(SALEM) - Salem firefighters were called out early Thursday morning at 5:53 AM. The Structure Fire was located at 2000 Robbins Lane SE Space 45.

Fire Department Spokesman Bill Holmstrom says the occupants Shawn and Debbie Neal discovered a fire in their bedroom after a smoke detector activated. They were able to get everyone out of the home safely.

When firefighters arrived on scene, Acting Captain John Justice reported smoke coming from the rear of this single story manufactured home. Firefighters made entry into the structure through the front door and to the rear bedroom.

UPDATED: Fire Guts Garage, Cars, Motorcycles in Keizer

Damage to the home and the vehicle's was estimated at $150,000.

(KEIZER) - Units of the Keizer Fire District responded to the report of a house fire shortly after 2:30 AM on Thursday.

First arriving units reported seeing a large amount of fire coming from the garage and two cars parked in the driveway also burning.

The fire was in a single family residence located at 3723 Shady Ct. NE. The home is owned by Donna M. Salata who resides in the residence with Ed McLaughlin.

Firefighters reported hearing three explosions while fighting the blaze.
