Portland, Oregon Soldier Dies in Afghanistan

27-year old Long N. Nguyen went to Afghanistan with the Oregon National Guard's 41st Combat Brigade Team in the summer of 2006.

(WASHINGTON) - The Department of Defense announced today the death of a soldier who was supporting Operation Enduring Freedom.

Sgt. Long N. Nguyen, 27, of Portland, Oregon, died Feb. 10th in Mazar-e-Sharif, Afghanistan, of a non-combat related wound.

Oregon and California Ocean Enforcement Teams Bust Crab Boat Operators

All commercial fishing laws are Class A Misdemeanors punishable by a fine up to $6,250 and up to one year in jail.

(SALEM) - Following the implementation of Oregon's new commercial crab gear rules, fish and wildlife enforcement personnel along the west coast and the United States Coast Guard (USCG) have been working off the Oregon coast and found that violations of these new rules were occurring.

Numerous commercial crab pots were seized and violations noted that are leading to several investigations.

Salem Police Conduct 3-Flags Safety Campaign

Traffic crashes are the leading cause of death for children over the age of 4 in the United States.

(SALEM) - The Salem Police Department is participating in the statewide "3-Flags" seatbelt safety campaign. The campaign runs February 5th through the 18th. Police say their goal is reducing the number of traffic related injuries and deaths through both education and enforcement.

During this safety campaign the Traffic Control Unit will be conducting several directed enforcement activities targeting specific violations.

Woman Falls Into Garbage Pit Near Salem; Dies From Injuries

Geraldine Hiebert suffered severe head injuries from her fall.

(SALEM) - A 70-year-old Salem woman was accidentally killed Sunday at the Salem/Keizer Recycling & Transfer Station after falling into the garbage pit.

Salem police say Geraldine Hiebert went to the dump located at 3250 Deerpark Drive SE, around 1:30 PM, with her son, Rickey Hiebert, to drop off a load of waste.

Death of California Man Found at Baldock Rest Area Near Wilsonville Deemed Suspicious

Investigation to this point indicates Mr. Hunt was visiting the area but no further information is being released.

(WILSONVILLE) - The Oregon State Medical Examiner has positively identified the body found January 26th in a thick brushy area about 100 yards south of the rear paved parking lot at Baldock Rest Area south of Wilsonville.

Identification was made using dental records. Photographs have now been released to assist with developing information related to this suspicious death investigation.

State Police say the body was positively identified as 56-year old Thomas Hean Hunt of Merced, California.

Salem Woman Driving Wrong Way on I-5 Kills Two Eugene Symphony Members

The northbound lanes on I-5 were closed until 3:00 AM as northbound traffic was diverted off at the Highway 34 interchange.

(ALBANY, Ore.) - A Salem woman is in custody after a fatal head-on crash near Albany that killed two women. It happened late Sunday night on northbound Interstate 5.

The two victims are members of the Eugene Symphony returning to their homes after a Sunday rehearsal.

Salem DMV Employee Arrested for Allegedly Going to Customer`s Home Looking for Sex

A DMV spokesperson says the employee was fired in December.

(SALEM) - A former Salem DMV employee has been arrested for allegedly going to a customers home looking for sex.

Keizer police say 54-year-old William Carnegie was arrested in January after months of investigation. They say that Carnegie used the woman’s personal information after helping her renew her driver’s license last June.

He allegedly went to the victim's home with a cashier’s check saying the woman had overpaid, and made sexual advances towards the woman.

Carnegie is facing misdemeanor official misconduct charges.

Benton County Again Named One of 100 Best Communities for Young People

State Lawmakers Unveil Immigration Reform Legislation

(SALEM) - A package of 10 immigration reform bills was unveiled Friday on the steps of the State Capitol.

Representatives Kim Thatcher (R-Keizer) and Linda Flores (R-Clackamas) have been drafting these bills for months and asked the House Speaker to form a special committee to take a serious look at these reforms.
