Defense Officials: Success in Afghanistan Important for Middle East

(WASHINGTON) - Afghanistan is an important country in the Middle East, and engagement in the region is crucial to U.S. and NATO success there, a top Defense Department leader said in congressional testimony today.

Oregon, Nationwide Gas Prices on Upward Swing

In the Salem-area, the price for a gallon of regular unleaded dropped one cent in the past week to $2.42.

(SALEM) - Consumers should expect fuel prices to climb steadily nationwide.

In the past week, the national average price for a gallon of regular rose by more than four cents to $2.23.

In Oregon, the statewide average went down a couple tenths of a cent to $2.42, but indications are the price decline, which began in early January, has run its course.

Soldier from Astoria, Oregon dies in Iraq

(SALEM) - The Department of Defense announced today the death of another Oregon soldier who was supporting Operation Iraqi Freedom.

Pfc. Brian A. Browning, 20, was a rifleman with Company B, 4th Battalion, 31st Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division (LI).

Brian A. Browning of Astoria, Oregon died Feb. 6th in Baghdad, Iraq, of wounds suffered from enemy small arms fire while conducting security operations. The infantryman was killed while conducting guard duty.

Salem Pipe Bomb Suspect Back in Court Tuesday

(SALEM) - The man who allegedly planted pipe bombs on four sport utility vehicles in the Salem-area that sent the community into panic back in August, is scheduled to appear in a Marion County Courtroom Tuesday morning.

44-year-old Lonnie Troy Glinski was arrested on Oct. 16th at his home in Sweet Home.

He is charged with seven counts of attempted aggravated murder and four counts of possession of a destructive device.

Sgt. Long Nguyen Was Valuable Asset to Oregon Army National Guard

Long Nguyen was born in Viet Nam on June 27, 1979 and moved to Portland with his parents at age 3.

(SALEM) - Oregon Army National Guard soldier Sgt. Long N. Nguyen, 27, of Portland, Oregon died Feb. 10th in Mazar-e-Sharif, Afghanistan, of a non-combat related wound.

Nguyen was assigned to the 41st Brigade Support Battalion, based in Portland, Ore.

Sgt. Nguyen deployed to Afghanistan in June 2006 with the 41st Infantry Brigade Combat Team, based in Tigard.

Salem Teen Busted for Alcohol at Rental House on Oregon Coast

16 other minors in the home had been drinking, nine of which were under the age of 18.

(LINCOLN CITY) - A Salem teenager, along with 16 other minors were issued alcohol-related citations after police busted a party in Lincoln City over the weekend.

Lincoln County Sheriff's Deputy Eric Sorby says he and another deputy were on patrol early Saturday morning in the area of Logan Road and NE 69th Street, when at about 12:30 AM they noticed several minors gathered on the street that appeared to be intoxicated.

They suspected a minor alcohol party was taking place at a residence nearby where other minors were seen.

Police Offer Background Information on Wrong Way Drivers

According to the Oregon Department of Transportation, between 2000 and 2004 there were 87 reported crashes statewide involving a wrong way driver resulting in 11 fatalities and 83 injuries.

(ALBANY) - State Police in Oregon have a few thoughts they wanted to share with drivers in the wake of Sunday night's tragic crash involving a wrong way driver northbound on Interstate 5 in the Albany area. Police say the driver that caused the crash was intoxicated.
