Salem Hospital Ranked #1 in Oregon For Cardiac Surgery

The hospital was also among the top five percent in the nation.

(SALEM) - Salem Hospital Regional Health Services announced Wednesday that it has been ranked number one in Oregon for Cardiac Surgery, among the top five percent in the nation for cardiac surgery and a recipient of the 2007 HealthGrades Cardiac Surgery Excellence Award™, according to a comprehensive study released by HealthGrades, the nation's leading healthcare ratings company.

As part of its ninth annual Hospital Quality in America Study, HealthGrades independently analyzed more than 5,000 hospitals in all 50 states and the District of Columbia for its 2007 ratings, objectively assessing their clinical outcomes and quality.

Spirit Mountain Casino starts a $40-million construction project.

(GRAND RONDE) - When the Spirit Mountain Casino changed its bingo hall into "The Peak" area for gaming it also lost its space for entertainers and concerts.

Now the casino is building a $40-million dollar facility behind the casino.

The new building will include a convention center that can also double as a concert hall.

(SALEM) - Salem-News.com's most visited day in history happened this week when the site received 597,751 hits. The traffic stems from many factors, but the big story was the arrest of an Oregon dad for using a stun gun on his 18-month old son.

Traffic on Salem-News.com took a big jump last summer when it was added to Google News, becoming one of the 4,500 news sites that supplies news to the world's largest search engine. A Google search of the words salem oregon news now sees Salem-News.com holding the top search position, ahead of the Statesman Journal newspaper.

Police Continue Search For Missing College Student

The circumstances of William Carl Mills disappearance remains a mystery.

(SALEM) - Salem Police are hoping that someone will come forward with information in the case of a Salem college student who has been missing since Jan. 26th.

Police are still looking for 35-year-old William Carl Mills, who was a part-time student at Chemeketa Community College.

Anyone with information on the whereabouts of William Mills is urged to contact Salem Police Detective Cpl. Jacob Burke at (503) 588-6050, Ext. 7163.

U.S. Transfers Humvees, Weapons to Afghan National Army

Many soldiers on the ground in Afghanistan are against handing Humvees over to the Afghan National Army. Their maintenance is intensive and they are difficult to drive on Afghanistan's roads.

(KABUL, Afghanistan) - The United States transferred 213 Humvees and more than 12,000 light weapons to the Afghan National Army during a ceremony Feb. 2 at a depot in Pol-e-charkhi, Afghanistan.

The transfer marks the beginning of delivery of more than 800 various up-armored vehicles for the ANA, according to Afghan President Hamid Karzai said.

(SALEM) - The Marion County trash burner must win renewal of its operating license from ODEQ to permit continuance of its Brooks operations. That new permit reduces the limits on particulate matter and acid gases, and increase the limits on nitrogen oxides and carbon monoxide.

BUT the new permit --NOT YET APPROVED-- multiplies the limits for DIOXIN by THIRTY TIMES for the most dangerous of emissions: From “one nanogram per cubic meter of air released” to a truly awesome “30 nanograms per cubic meter of air released.”

One Dead, Five Seriously Injured in Alcohol-Related Crash

Witnesses reported that prior to the traffic crash, the 1989 Buick struck a lamp post in the Spirit Mountain Casino parking lot.

(GRAND RONDE) - One person died and five people received serious injuries Monday evening after a two-vehicle head-on crash on Highway 18 about four miles east of the Spirit Mountain casino.

This is the second crash at this location in the past two days involving an intoxicated driver crossing over and striking a vehicle in the oncoming lane, seriously injuring the other drivers and passengers.

Oregon Gas Prices Fall While Nationwide Prices Rise

In the past week, the average price for a gallon of regular unleaded in the Salem-area fell 5-cents to $ 2.43.

(SALEM) - During the past week, the national average price for a gallon of regular gasoline rose three cents to $2.18.

In contrast, Oregon's statewide average dropped a nickel per gallon to $2.42 and Washington's went down almost six cents.

In the past month, the Oregon statewide average price has backed off by more than a quarter a gallon.

Of the four measured Oregon metropolitan areas, average prices in Eugene-Springfield went down by almost 33-cents in the past month.

Oregon AG And Samsung Reach $90 Million Settlement

Oregonians share of the settlement will be determined at a later date.

(SALEM) - Attorney General Hardy Myers announced Tuesday a proposed $90 million nationwide settlement for consumers, state purchasers, and others with Samsung Semiconductor, Inc. and Samsung Electronics Company Ltd. (Samsung), with headquarters in Korea and the United States.

Subject to court approval, the settlement agreement will resolve a portion of the pending claims brought by state attorneys general, as well as private class actions, against the world’s largest manufacturers of Dynamic Random Access Memory (DRAM) chips for manipulating prices.
