Tacoma School Shooting Prompts Red Cross To Shares Tips for Helping Youth Cope with Trauma

The Willamette Chapter of the American Red Cross offers information in response to Wednesday's fatal shooting at Foss High School in Tacoma.

(SALEM) - “The Red Cross would like to offer some safety tips to help students and their families cope with this disaster” said Jeff Kresner, Emergency Services Director. “How a parent or other adult reacts to youth and young adults following any traumatic event can help them recover more quickly and more completely” he added.

Disasters are upsetting to everyone involved. Youth, older people, and/or people with disabilities are especially at risk. For a youth or young adult, his or her view of the world as a safe and predictable place is temporarily lost.

Hussein Death Video Proves Bad Taste Conquers All

It may be old-fashioned, but this news group has chosen to follow our gut. And it tells us that a death video is in extremely bad form.

(SALEM) - Broadcast television news stations have a long-standing rule against showing death as it occurs or in any situation thereafter that is distasteful or offensive. That includes car accidents, drownings, and most assuredly, hangings.

When the Statesman Journal posted the link to Saddam Hussein’s hanging on Wednesday, with nary a disclaimer, they let down the public good.

Tyler Technologies Signs Contract to Provide Provide MUNIS Financial Management Software For Salem-Keizer Public Schools

The contract, which includes a full suite of financial and human resource software, is valued at more than $1.4 million.

(SALEM) - Tyler Technologies, Inc. based in Dallas, Texas announced Wednesday that it has reached an agreement with Salem-Keizer Public Schools in to provide its MUNIS financial management software and related professional services to the district.

The pact gives Salem-Keizer Public Schools the distinction of being the first school district in the state of Oregon to select Tyler's MUNIS Enterprise Resource Planning software for its accounting needs.

The Salem-Keizer school district serves nearly 40,000 students and has approximately 4,000 full-time employees, making it the second largest district in the state.

New Accident Reporting Rules in Effect For Oregon Employers

Oregon OSHA updated reporting requirements in September 2006 following public hearings on proposed rule changes in August.

(SALEM) - Oregon employers are now required to report fatal work-related motor vehicle accidents to Oregon OSHA under recently updated safety and health rules that took effect on January 1st.

Motor vehicle accidents nationally represent one-quarter of the total for workplace deaths.

According to U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics data, motor vehicle deaths on the job rose 2 percent in the United States during 2005.

Oregon Parks And Recreation Announces New Veterans` And War Memorial Grant Program

OPRD has awarded more than $20 million in lottery-funded grants to support local community projects since 1998.

(SALEM) - In a move to honor Oregon's thousands of soldiers and veterans, the Oregon Parks and Recreation Department is inviting non-profit veterans' organizations to apply for the state's first grants to help build and restore veterans' and war memorials on public land.

Organizations eligible for the lottery-supported funding must be based in Oregon, or, like the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars, have chapters in the state.

OPRD's Local Government Advisory Committee will review applications and recommend grants to the Oregon Parks and Recreation Commission.

Crash Sends Four to The Hospital

Three others involved in the crash were not injured.

(Salem) - Woodburn police are investigating a two vehicle head on crash that sent four people to the hospital yesterday.

Just after 7:30 PM, the Woodburn Fire District responded to a two vehicle head on crash in the 1400 block of Silverton Ave in Woodburn.

On arrival the crew found the two vehicles blocking the road.

Dangerous Sex Offender Sought by Police

Olonzie Jr. Clemman did not return to the Work Center on Saturday.

(SALEM, Ore.) - Marion County Sheriff Parole and Probation Deputies are asking for the public’s help in locating a twice convicted sex offender who did not return to the Marion County Work Center over the weekend.

57-year-old Olonzie Jr. Clemman is living at the work center at 4000 Aumsville Highway SE as a condition of his post-prison supervision. However, Clemman did not report to the center Saturday.

Oregon Gas Prices Continue Upward Trend

In the Salem-area, the average price for a gallon of regular unleaded has jumped two cents since Dec. 26th to $2.69 according to AAA.

(SALEM) - The new year began on a good note -- at least where fuel prices are concerned.

Since the day after Christmas, the national average price for a gallon of regular gasoline went down by more than a penny and a half, but in Oregon it went up two-tenths of a cent.

At $2.69, Oregon's average gasoline price is still 2nd highest in the nation.
