Oregon Congressman Announces Plans to Abolish Military Draft

Congressman Peter DeFazio has a long history of opposition to the SSS on grounds of fiscal responsibility as well as a desire to protect personal liberties, which are threatened when the government is able to mandate military service.

(WASHINGTON, D.C.) - Congressman Peter DeFazio (D-OR) has announced plans to reintroduce legislation to abolish the Selective Service System (SSS) and put it in "deep standby" status soon after the 110th Congress convenes in January 2007.

Deep standby would suspend draft registration, reduce a significant portion of SSS staff, and disband the SSS boards.

DeFazio's announcement comes in the wake of recent revelations that the SSS plans to conduct a "readiness exercise" for the system by 2009.

Only taxpayers who self-filed paper returns last year will receive this year's tax forms and instructions by mail.

(SALEM) - With tax season now here, the Oregon Department of Revenue reminds taxpayers who have moved to notify the department of their new address.

“We're getting close to mailing out paper tax forms and instructions. If we have current addresses to send them to, it saves taxpayers a lot of frustration,” said Joan Linn, Tax Services Manager.

“If taxpayers don't let us know their new address, or leave a forwarding address with the post office, they may not get the tax forms they need.”

Salem-Keizer Announces Seven New Prevention Intervention Resource Specialists

These specialists work in each of the feeder school areas, providing direct support to students dealing with issues of drug and alcohol, youth gangs, and violence.

(SALEM) - The Salem-Keizer School District is pleased to announce the addition of seven Prevention Intervention Resource Specialists.

They lead the District’s diversion education program; conduct recovery support groups for students coming out of treatment programs; support the district’s drug, alcohol, and violence prevention programs in schools; and facilitate improved communication among students, parents, teachers, and administrators.

Registration Underway For Free 3-Week Parenting Class

The class fills up quickly and there is room for only 35 parents.

(SALEM) - Michael Hammond, Prevention Intervention Resource Specialist with the Salem-Keizer School District, will be teaching a special 3-week parenting class for parents who are concerned about drug/alcohol issues that involve their children.

The class is free and will meet at Houck Middle School, 1155 Connecticut SE.

The starting date is January 23rd, with subsequent classes on January 30th and February 6th.

(CANYONVILLE) - Oregon State Police (OSP) are looking for two men involved in a Monday afternoon incident on Interstate 5 in the Canyonville area after they rammed an OSP patrol car while attempting to elude in a stolen vehicle.

The car, reported stolen out of California, was recovered abandoned about an hour later east of Canyonville and witnesses reported the two men got into another vehicle.
