Oregon Health Officials Warn of Carbon Monoxide Danger

Carbon monoxide kills. It is not worth the risk to burn alternative fuels in the house.

(SALEM) - In the wake of at least five reported carbon monoxide deaths and 100 illnesses in the Northwest this week, public health officials in the Oregon Department of Human Services are reminding people that it's never safe to burn alternative fuels inside their homes.

"In these recent cases, power outages and extreme cold caused people to seek ways to keep warm," said Mel Kohn, M.D., state epidemiologist in the DHS Public Health Division. "But you should not burn gasoline, propane, natural gas or charcoal inside your home. Even operating devices that burn these fuels inside a basement, garage or near an open window can be dangerous."

One Fatality When Three Teens Crash Car

As of 1:39 PM Thursday, Kyle was upgraded to Fair Condition.

(SALEM) - Just before 1:00 AM Wednesday, the Marion County Sheriff's Office responded to a one-vehicle crash in the 400 block of Hylo Road S.E. Salem. Upon arriving, deputies observed that a white 1992 Chevrolet four-door vehicle had left the roadway and impacted a tree.

Three occupants were involved, the 17-year old driver, Joseph Mode of Salem was transported to OHSU with serious injuries, 15-year old Brandon Rockwell, also from Salem, was pronounced deceased at the scene and the remaining passenger 18-year-old Kyle LaValley of Washington, was transported to Salem Hospital with unknown injuries.

Reward Offered in Florence Boatwright Murder

The Marion County Sheriff’s Office is seeking the public’s assistance into information regarding the 11/28/2006 murder of Florence Boatwright.

(SALEM) - The Carole Sund/Carrington Foundation is offering a $5,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for Florence’s death.

Carole and Juli Sund and Silvina Pelosso were three women sightseers who were missing and later found murdered near Yosemite National Park in February of 1999.

We Can Defeat Distorting Damage-Done By Us

(SALEM) - “We have met the enemy and he is us” has become a wise and widely-cited Pogo-pronouncement.

What Pogo is telling us is that “We” did it... and in the process became “us”... obviously “to blame” for what’s gone wrong.

But then, those words reflect what’s “gone right”, too; not by politicals but via democratic development; leading “us” on, NOW, to still further possible practicalities.

Oregon Holiday Travelers Will Pay More For Gas Than All Else in Continental U.S.

At $2.67, Oregon's average gasoline price remains 2nd highest in the nation. Hawaii has the highest average price at $2.83.

(SALEM) - While Oregon's average price gained almost three cents during the week, the national average increased by slightly more than a penny.

In the past week, gas prices across the nation generally continued their upward swing, boosting the national average price for a gallon of regular to $2.31, compared to Oregon's statewide average of $2.67.

The price of crude oil, currently below $63 per barrel, is about where it was one week ago. Late last week, OPEC announced it would reduce oil production by another 500,000 barrels per day, beginning the first of February, 2007.

Precision Air Strike Against Insurgent Command Post

(KANDAHAR, Afghanistan) - Overnight, ISAF forces launched a precision air strike against a known insurgent command and logistics post in an isolated area of the Panjwayi district of Kandahar province.

The precision-guided munitions impacted on target, completely destroying it with no collateral damage. This strike is part of Operation Baaz Tsuka, the on-going operation to remove remaining insurgents from the Panjawayi and Zahre districts.

This precise strike is similar to the successful destruction of another insurgent command post on the night of 13 December.
