Salem Police Investigate Homicide

Witnesses reported hearing a gunshot and then observed Estrada collapse on the sidewalk near the parking lot of the complex.

(SALEM) - At about 2:00 PM Saturday, Salem Patrol Officers responded to a subject down on the sidewalk near the parking lot of an apartment complex at 2530 Broadway Ave. NE.

Responding Officers confirmed that the male subject had a gunshot wound. 28-year old Jose Luis Estrada was transported to Salem Hospital by ambulance, but died before they got there.

A vehicle of interest which was observed leaving the area is described as a white 1991 Geo Metro, Oregon License #RXB 614.

Oregon State Police Investigate Two Suspicious Powder Incidents in Salem Area

(SALEM) - Oregon State Police detectives are conducting an investigation into two separate suspicious letters containing powder that were received at two State agency locations in Salem. In both instances, testing by Salem Fire Department Hazardous Materials Team responders determined the powder was non-hazardous.

If one of them is working for somebody else, the other must take full caution and care; especially if chosen and trusted so to do, uniquely in the public interest, by very-public vote, now forced under sharp, serious surveillance --again.

Trust is on the voter-legislator side, and cannot in good conscience be applied to provide private profit for the other side.

Oregon`s AG Announces $55.4 Million Settlement with Tobacco Manufacturers

Long-standing dispute over money owed the MSA ends; Oregon to receive $600,000

(SALEM) - Attorney General Hardy Myers today announced the State of Oregon will receive $615,000 under a $55.4 million settlement reached with House of Prince A/S and Scandinavian Tobacco, S.I.A. to resolve a dispute over enforcement of the 1998 Master Settlement Agreement (MSA).

The MSA requires tobacco manufacturers to make annual payments to the states, to compensate for billions of dollars in health care costs associated with tobacco-related diseases under Medicaid.

3-Alarm Fire in Metropolitan Building in Historic Downtown Salem

Traffic on Liberty Street through downtown Salem was blocked for approximately an hour during the heaviest traffic of the day.

(SALEM) - Smoke coming from a building in downtown Salem Friday afternoon sent Salem Fire Department to 160 Liberty St NE at about 4:30.

First arriving firefighters saw heavy smoke coming from the backside of the building when they arrived with 3 Engines, 1 Ladder Truck, and a Battalion Chief.

Crews forced their way into the unoccupied Metropolitan Building. Their primary search revealed smoke and flames coming from an electrical control panel inside the building.

(KABUL, Afghanistan) - A different kind of battle raged inside the gates of the American military base in Kabul, Afghanistan, it's one is bringing winter cheer, and no casualties.

"It's like a big playground, it's a winter wonderland in Afghanistan," said Janette Arencibia, of the US Navy.

The troops say they needed this; a break from the seriousness of war, where a soldier was graded by the size and accuracy of their snowball, suddenly they were all like a bunch of kids.

Fatal Traffic Crash Closes Oregon`s Hwy 22 West of 99W

Highway 22 is closed, and is estimated to be reopened by midnight.

(RICKREALL) - Oregon State Police are investigating a fatal traffic crash that occurred late Thursday afternoon on Highway 22W west of Highway 99W. One person is deceased and three others are either critical or serious. No names or additional information is expected to be released until Friday morning.

Preliminary information indicates a Nissan Sentra with three female occupants was eastbound on Highway 22 when it was struck head-on by a westbound Ford pickup with two male occupants.

The female driver of the Nissan was pronounced deceased at the scene.

OHSU and the DHS Partner Up to Help Oregon State Hospital Patients

The new physicians will devote 80% of their time to patient care, and 20% consulting with community programs and conducting research

(SALEM) - Oregon State Hospital patients will receive enhanced psychiatric care, thanks to a new partnership between Oregon Health and Science University and the Oregon Department of Human Services.

The two-year agreement adds a chief psychiatrist and up to six physicians to the state hospital's Salem campus. John Bischof, M.D., former chief medical officer for Cascadia Behavioral Health, has been named chief psychiatrist.

Wheatland Ferry Remains Closed Till New Years Eve

(SALEM) - The Wheatland Ferry operation is currently closed due to high water in the Willamette River. The ferry will remain closed through December 31st, according to a press release issued Thursday afternoon.
