Empty Bowls Fundraiser Hopes to Help Hungry in Salem

So far this year, 4.4 millions pounds of food has been distributed to hungry families through a network of 70 member charities.

(SALEM) - Bowls come in all shapes, sizes and colors -- especially at “Empty Bowls,” the fifth annual fundraiser for Marion-Polk Food Share, hosted by the State Street Merchants in downtown Salem.

On Salem’s First Wednesday, December 6th, from 5:00 to 8:00 PM at US Bank, Ladd & Bush Branch, 302 State Street, nearly 300 handmade bowls will be ready to sell.

With each purchase, a free simple meal of soup and bread will be served by Wild Pear Restaurant and Cascade Banking Company.

(KABUL, Afghanistan) - Afghanistan is one of the most historic places in the world, and examples of the country's historical significance are seemingly everywhere. One place Western forces are now spending time an old British military base shared with the Afghan National Army, and as Tim King reports, they are harboring both old world equipment and work ethics.

Historical sights are not uncommon in Kabul, Afghanistan, places like this 140-year old British military base in Kabul.

Soldiers serving here are working among some of the oldest and most historical artifacts and functioning equipment in recent history. One of the most interesting relics on site is an early British steam powered tank.

(KABUL, Afghanistan) - Oregon Governor Ted Kulongoski is no stranger to the military, and troops in Afghanistan were not surprised to see him on base at Camp Phoenix where the Oregon National Guard is based with the 41st Combat Brigade. As Tim King shows us in this next report, Oregon's top dog got a good feel for the local culture and the progress of the military mission known as Enduring Freedom.

Oregon's Commander in Chief visited Camp Phoenix in Afghanistan this week to inspect the operation and congratulate Oregon troops who are deployed here with the 41st Combat Brigade. He says the road ahead is not a short one, but expressed confidence in the abilities of Oregon's soldiers.

Life Flight Called To Canby Crash for Four Victims

There were five people in the car, but the fifth was able to walk away from the scene, getting his own ride to the hospital.

(CANBY) - Four people were taken to area trauma centers by Lifeflight after the car they were in crashed Monday night on Hwy 170 at South Good Lane.

Canby Fire units were dispatched to the single car Motor Vehicle Crash at about 9:00 PM. When responders arrived they identified four victims in a compact car; all sustaining serious injuries.

Life Flight was activated along with additional ambulances to transport all the injured victims.

One rear-seat passenger required heavy extrication to remove him from the twisted wreckage. The patients names and ages were not available at the time of this report.

FOUND! Mom and Kids OK: Father Still Missing

(GRANTS PASS) - This afternoon, December 4th, at about 1:45 PM, Search & Rescue officials were notified that a vehicle and a female waving an umbrella were spotted by a helicopter search crew near the Rogue River in the area of Bear Camp Viewpoint off Bear Camp Road. This location is near the Curry / Josephine County line in Josephine County.

The helicopter was able to land and verified that the mother and two children were alive. The father reportedly was not with the vehicle. Additional search crews and resources are being diverted to the area to help try and locate the father.

Minahan Named Western Oregon President

Dr. Minahan served as provost of WOU from 1998 to 2004, and served as Dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences and Professor of Philosophy from 1986 to 2004.

(MONMOUTH) - The State Board of Higher Education has appointed Western Oregon University interim president, John Minahan president of Western Oregon University.

School Based Health Center Opens at Hoover Elementary

The center is open every weekday morning from 7:45 AM – noon.

(SALEM) - Last week, a new health center opened on the Hoover Elementary School campus.

The center is run by Marion County Health Department and it serves students enrolled at Hoover Elementary or any children belonging to the Boys & Girls Club of Marion-Polk Counties.

The center provides physical examinations; vision, dental and blood pressure screenings; health and wellness education; prescription medications; immunizations; and diagnosis and treatment of illnesses in a cost-effective manner.

Oregon Now Has Nation`s Second Highest Gas Prices

The nationwide average for a gallon of regular unleaded gas Monday was at $2.28, up 8 cents from a month ago.

(SALEM) - The price for a gallon of regular unleaded gas in Oregon has climbed to $2.60, up 18 cents from one month ago.

That is the second highest price in the nation.

Only Hawaii's average price is higher at $2.83 a gallon.

In Salem, the average price as of Monday is $2.58 a gallon, up 21 cents from one month ago.

The highest average price in the state is in the Medford-Ashland metro area, where the average price Monday was $2.66 a gallon, up 28 cents from a month ago.

In Portland-Vancouver the average price is at $2.57, and in Eugene-Springfield the average price is $2.62 a gallon.

"The abrupt price increases are blamed on a combination of factors," said AAA Oregon Public Affairs Director Elliott Eki.

Navy Sailor From Salem Pleads Guilty to Espionage

Weinmann pleaded guilty to trying to transmit classified information related to national defense to a representative of a foreign government on Oct. 19th, 2005 while he was in or near Vienna, Austria.

(NORFOLK, Va. ) - A Navy sailor from Salem pled guilty Monday to espionage, desertion and other charges after the Navy accused him of stealing a laptop and peddling its classified contents to an undisclosed foreign governments.

22-year-old Petty Officer 3rd Class Ariel J. Weinmann, faces a sentence of life in prison without parole, a dishonorable discharge from the Navy and forfeiture of all pay.

Truck Transporting Bees Overturns on Oregon Highway

There was a whole lot of buzz, but no one was stung by the honeybees.

(BEND) - A truck transporting honeybees overturned Sunday afternoon at the junction of Highway 97 and Highway 197 spilling the load onto the highway.
There was a report of a minor injury to a passenger but no reports of anyone being stung by the bees.

The 1998 Freightliner truck transporting a large load of bees overturned after losing control at the junction of Highway 97 and Highway 197. The bees spilled onto Highway 197 blocking the highway. The beehives were eventually moved onto the shoulder for later reloading onto another vehicle.
