Independence Hospital in Kabul, Afghanistan Opens with Many Needs (VIDEO)

(KABUL, Afghanistan) - A shipment of 300 gallons of Miller paint from the U.S. marked the beginning of a hospital restoration project in Kabul, Afghanistan this year. The project is already starting to reopen parts of the facility, and as Tim King reports, the time donated by U.S. troops is without question, winning the hearts and minds of the people in this war-torn city.

(SALEM) - Here we go again!

The National Weather service says a Pacific says will move moisture into the valley late tonight and into Thursday morning which ill overrun the cold air that is in place now and produce freezing rain.

That could mean another day off for students throughout the valley, and headaches for morning commuters.

The snow that fell Monday and Tuesday, combined with black ice, caused numerous fender benders, and closed most schools in the mid-valley on Tuesday.

The NWS has issued a Winter Storm Watch for the Cascade foothills through Thursday morning.

Salem Man Found Dead, Woodburn Man Critically Wounded in South Salem

Police have identified Monday night's shooting victim as 18-year-old Jose Alonzo Quezada of Woodburn.

(SALEM) - Salem police, along the state medical examiner and Oregon State Police crime lab investigators are continuing to investigate the discovery of a body in a Mazda Protégé in the 2700 block of Summer Street SE Tuesday.

The body, may be connected to an overnight shooting Monday Church Street near South Salem High School.

Police identified the victim as 21-year-old Johnny Borrero of Salem.

Monday night, just after 9:00 PM a man now identified as 18-year-old Jose Alonzo Quezada of Woodburn, contacted police at a Center Street mini-mart at 12th Street SE and Fairview, and was taken to Salem Hospital then transferred to OHSU in Portland with two life threatening gun shot wounds to his back

Albany to Begin Winter Testing of Santiam-Albany Canal

The canal was dug by hand in the 1870s.

(ALBANY) - City of Albany staff and consulting engineers and hydrologists will return to the Santiam-Albany Canal this winter to continue checking the stability of the stream banks and looking for problems.

The city started a comprehensive assessment of the condition of the canal in late September by increasing the water level while looking for problems that might result.

Continuing with the test in the wet weather season, surveyors will set benchmarks for global positioning systems, and city staff and consultants will walk the length of the 18-mile canal to check it visually.

Salem, Keizer Fall Leaf Hauls Set For Saturday

Food or cash donations will be taken at the Salem sites for the Marion-Polk Food Share.

(SALEM) - The Cities of Salem and Keizer will be offering their annual fall leaf haul program on Saturday.

This years fall leaf haul, will take place from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM in both cities.

No brush, branches or limbs will be accepted.

The program is designed for Salem and Keizer residents only (no commercial landscapers, please).

Cash donations also will be taken to support the Parks Tradition Fund.

The garbage haulers are donating equipment and operators.

Police in Linn And Benton Counties to Participate in Two Shop With Events

Each child has a $25.00 shopping limit and works their way around the store with a police officer to find gifts for family and friends.

(ALBANY ) - For the 12th year, Corvallis and Albany-area police officers will shop together with local disadvantaged and foster children for Christmas gifts as part of a local program called "Shop With a Cop".

Last year, 153 children shopped with state, county, and city police officers in the two very successful events while purchasing videos, clothing, toys and other special gifts.

The event is sponsored mainly through donations from police officer associations, private individuals, and K-Mart, Target, and Wal-Mart.

North Marion County Firefighters Food Drive Saturday

Food and cash donations collected by firefighters and the Boy Scouts will be distributed locally in their respective communities.

(WOODBURN) - The North Marion County Firefighters Annual Food Drive will be held this Saturday from 9:30 AM to 1:00 PM.

Firefighters from the Woodburn, Hubbard, Aurora, Donald and Waconda stations will be driving through their respective communities.

Food collected in the Hubbard, Donald, Aurora area will be distributed through the Hubbard Police Reserves organization.

Shooting In Front of South Salem High School

The victim is hospitalized with life threatening injuries

(SALEM) - A shooting occurred in front of South Salem High School Tuesday night at about 9:15. Witnesses heard several gunshots, and one bystander saw people running away from the scene.
One male victim was apparently located almost a mile away at a convenience store. He is hospitalized with life threatening injuries after being shot in the back more than once.
The weapon, possibly a .45 caliber handgun, was reportedly found in the center of Church Street, in front of the high school.
There is no connection between this incident and the school known at this time.

Oregon Penitentiary Inmate Dies Following Apparent Suicide Attempt

Oregon State Police are investigating the death at the Oregon State Penitentiary

(SALEM) - An Oregon State Penitentiary inmate died at Salem Hospital on Tuesday morning, November 28th, of apparent complications from self-inflicted wounds.

Monday night about 11:14 PM, 46-year old Randall James was found bleeding and unresponsive in his single cell in the prison's Intensive Management Unit. Staff immediately began emergency first aid and James was transported to the hospital by ambulance where he was stabilized and admitted. He died shortly after 7:00 Tuesday morning.

STORM WATCH: Snow, Black Ice, Reeks Havoc For Willamette Valley Drivers Tuesday

The National Weather Service says another winter storm this week could bring freezing rain to the valley Wednesday night into Thursday morning.

(SALEM) - Snow showers along with black ice caused some major traffic headaches throughout the Salem-area Tuesday morning.

The snow, which began falling early Monday, created for many a winter wonderland, and gave some kids an extended Thanksgiving Holiday break.

Roads in most areas, where city, county, and state road crews hadn’t got to yet to remove the snow, slush, and black ice became slick and dangerous yesterday and today.

Firefighters and medics from the Jefferson Fire District were busy this morning responding to three motor vehicle accidents along I-5 District spokeswoman Elaine Parrott said.
