Embedded Journalist Tim King Joins Oregon Soldiers in Afghanistan

After a somewhat arduous journey, Reporter/Photojournalist Tim King has joined the 41st Combat Brigade of the National Guard at Camp Phoenix, Afghanistan

(SALEM) - It must have been a long trip, you’re thinking. That’s one way to put it. The morning of Monday, November 6th, the Salem-News.com crew chaperoned Tim to the Portland International Airport and headed for Delta.
We watched as his bags carrying the bullet proof vest and helmet, and his tripod in its duffel bag, were all loaded up on the cart and taken through the baggage shoot. With camera slung over his shoulder and carryon bag in hand, off he went to remove his shoes for the nice lady.

Michigan Football Legend Bo Schembechler Passes Away

Schembechler was appointed head football coach at Miami of Ohio in 1963, a position he held until taking over the Michigan program prior to the 1969 campaign.

(ANN ARBOR, Mich.) - Legendary football coach Bo Schembechler passed away Friday morning at Detroit Providence Hospital at the age of 77.

As the winningest head coach in Michigan football history, Bo Schembechler’s teams won or tied for an impressive 13 Big Ten championships during his 21-year tenure.

Under Schembechler’s guidance, Michigan’s 96-10-3 regular season record through the decade of the 1970s was the nation’s best.

Oregon State Posts Records in Enrollment This Year

The university charted particularly strong growth in the number of students taking courses online via the E-campus program.

(CORVALLIS) - Oregon State University is home to a record 19,362 students this school year, and within that population are higher-than-ever numbers of minority students, a larger percentage of graduate students and big increases in the newly enrolled.

The new enrollment total represents growth of less than 1 percent from last year’s total of 19,236. That growth took place, however, in a year in which enrollment declined at four of the seven institutions in the Oregon University System.

Ducks Collecting Toys For Tots at Friday`s Basketball Game

Friday night represents the first opportunity for fans to donate toys, as there will also be an opportunity at the women’s basketball game on Nov. 30th, as they face Saint Mary’s (Calif.)

(EUGENE) - Oregon student athletes in association with the Student Athlete Advisory Council (SAAC) will be collecting new, unwrapped toys as part of the Toys for Tots program, this Friday at the men’s basketball game against UC Irvine.

Fans are encouraged to bring donations to the game, where they will be collected at the entrances by various athletes.

If fans cannot bring a toy to the game, they will also have the opportunity to make cash donations to the Duckling Fund which has been established to support Mason May, a young child in the community suffering from with Medulloblastoma, a form of brain cancer.

New Report Finds Serious Oral Disease Problem in Oregon

Tobacco use and excessive alcohol use accounts for approximately 75 percent of all oral cancer in Oregon.

(SALEM) - Oral disease is a serious, often overlooked public health problem that affects the majority of Oregonians during their lifetime, according to a new report from the Oregon Department of Human Services Public Health Division.

"The Burden of Oral Disease in Oregon" describes the extent of the problem and its consequences, and offers strategies for improvement.

Three Injured in Hwy 34 Crash Thursday

Highway 34 was closed in both directions for about 40 minutes to allow LifeFlight to land, load the patient, and then depart

(LEBANON) - Three people escaped without life-threatening injuries Thursday following a two-vehicle crash on Highway 34 about 1/2 mile east of Interstate 5.

Both vehicles ended up partially submerged in water bordering the highway.

Two Salem Teens Arrested For Shooting Cow For Meat

The teens told deputies that they went to the farm with the intent of killing the cow and that they wanted the meat.

(SALEM) - On Wednesday, November 8th, Marion County Sheriff's Deputies responded to a call from Donald Jones, a farmer who lives at 6611 Liberty Rd S, south of Salem.

Jones told deputies that someone had killed one of his cows and had cut the cow up and had taken a portion of the cow’s body.

When deputies arrived, they found that the cow had apparently been shot and cut apart with two steak knives that were still at the scene.

Oregon Highway 18 to Re-Open Without Restrictions Thursday Night

As of Thursday morning, ODOT had approximately two dozen more log truck loads of timber to move from the area, about four miles west of Grand Ronde.

(GRAND RONDE) - The Oregon Department of Transportation plans to reopen both lanes of Highway 18 without restriction after nightfall Thursday night.

ODOT has been allowing alternating two-way traffic controlled by flaggers and a pilot car since Tuesday night, while crews worked to remove more than 100 trees knocked down by strong winds early Monday.

In all, ODOT estimates a total of 80 log truck loads of fallen timber will be transferred from the highway to a location in Willamina.

Candidates Sought For Salem-Keizer Citizens` Budget Committee

Four vacancies exist at this time.

(SALEM) - The Salem-Keizer School District 2007-08 Citizens' Budget Committee is seeking four candidates.

The positions are open to all qualified registered voters of the district; except officers, agents or employees of the school district.

Each candidate must be a resident of Salem-Keizer School District 24J

Albany Seeking New City Council Representative

Applicants must be at least 18-years- old, have lived in Albany for at least one year, and in Ward I for at least 90 days.

(ALBANY ) - The Albany City Council is seeking a new representative from Ward I to replace Councilor Doug Killin, who is Mayor-elect and will take office January 1st, 2007.

The Albany City Charter requires that a position left vacant midterm be filled by appointment by the remaining members of the council.

The council is seeking applications from residents of Ward I who are interested in serving the remaining two years of Killin’s term.
