Report Shows Head Start And Early Education Prevents Crime, Generates Tax Savings For Oregon Families

Oregon law enforcement and business leaders are calling for increased federal funding for Head Start.

(SALEM) - Attorney General Hardy Myers, Oregon law enforcement leaders and a representative of the business community released a report today that shows Head Start not only prepares children to succeed in school, it also prevents crime, saves Oregon taxpayers money and is good for the economy.

The report calls for increased investments to expand access to Head Start and improve the quality of programs.

(HATTIESBURG, Miss) - Tim King bid farewell to friends and family at the Oregon Military Headquarters in Salem, November 7th, to be embedded as a journalist with the 41st Combat Brigade of the Oregon National Guard.

He headed first for New Orleans, where he was picked up by the Camp Shelby shuttle and taken to Hattiesburg, Mississippi, near the back gate of the base and found a motel for the night. Camp Shelby is the Army base where the troops leaving for Afghanistan were located that he was to rendezvous with. He learned an old lesson about best-laid plans, they often go awry.

(SALEM) - The National Weather Service has issued a HIGH WIND WARNING for the entire Oregon Coast along with Polk and Yamhill Counties.

The warning remains in effect until 6:00 PM.

South winds are expected to increase to 35 To 50 mph along the coast this morning.

Peak gusts at headlands and beaches will be up to 85 mph.

A High Wind Warning means a hazardous high wind event is expected or occurring. Sustained wind speeds of at least 40 mph or gusts of 58 mph or more can lead to property damage.

Highway 18 Partially Re-Opened Tuesday

ODOT will use flaggers and a pilot car through Wednesday and into Thursday while attempting to remove about 80 log truck loads of downed timber

(GRANDE RONDE) - The Oregon Department of Transportation opened one lane of Highway 18 at about 5:30 PM Tuesday allowing alternating two-way traffic controlled by flaggers and a pilot car.

ODOT crews and a specialty tree-felling contractor finished dropping trees that were leaning precariously toward the highway at about noon on Tuesday.

ODOT will continue using flaggers and a pilot car through Wednesday and into Thursday while the logs are moved from the highway to a location in Willamina, about 15 miles to the east.

Crews will work through Tuesday and Wednesday night in an effort to reopen the highway without restrictions as soon as possible.

Motorists should expect delays of 20 minutes or less.

The section of Highway 18 between U.S. 101 at Otis Junction and Grande Ronde has been closed since early Monday after more than 100 trees fell across the highway due to high winds and rain-saturated soil.

Two Alarm House Fire Damages North Salem Home

The fire caused $225,000 in damage to the home.

(SALEM) - Brian and Tammy Mumey placed bug bombs throughout their home due to an extreme ant problem.

They left their home at approximately 5:30 PM to stay with friends for the evening.

Salem Fire Department received the call for a structure fire at 225 Stark Street N. at 10:50 PM Tuesday.

Canby Police Car In 3-Vehicle Crash

The Canby Police car was driven by a Canby Police Sergeant and a Canby Police Lieutenant was a passenger.

(CANBY) - According to police, it appears that about 4:45 PM, a Canby police car turned from South End Road onto Southbound SR 99E, and collided with a 1995 Toyota Camry. The Camry was driven by an adult female from Tualatin, who was taken to Oregon Health Sciences University with serious, but not life threatening, injuries.

The first impact caused a secondary crash with a third vehicle, a Ford F-150 pick up truck driven by an adult male. He was hospitalized with minor injuries.

Tragic Reminder of Oregon Winter Driving Hazards

A traffic crash took the life of a Klamath Falls woman Tuesday morning

(KLAMATH FALLS) - Tuesday at 9:20 AM Oregon State Police Troopers from the Klamath Falls Patrol Office responded to mile post 42.5 on highway 140 west.

When they arrived, Troopers located one vehicle, a 2003 Ford Excursion, off the highway, crashed into a tree. The vehicle was extensively damaged, and the driver, the lone occupant, was deceased at the scene.

Troopers reported icy conditions in the area. They were assisted at the scene by the Harriman Rural Fire Department and ODOT.
