(SALEM) - Free Thanksgiving meals for the community are provided by several area businesses and organizations. Regardless of the late date, most of these groups would be very grateful for donations of food or of your time. Helping serve, wash dishes, bus tables or greeting people may be the perfect place for you to volunteer over this holiday. Call them for information.

Represented here are the cities of Salem, Keizer, Dallas, Silverton, and Stayton.

Oregon`s Willamette River a Rising Priority (VIDEO)

Dredging was the topic of top discussion Thursday, and all hands were on deck, working together.

(SALEM) - At the invitation of Captain Richard Chesborough of the Willamette Queen, a group met Thursday to discuss the health and enhancement of the Willamette River.

Kevin Montgomery was on board to chat with attendees and witness the WRCM project underway, capturing interviews and documenting the process.

The Willamette River Channel Maintenance Workgroup was formed to address issues and challenges for the future of the river.

Liz VanLeeuwen, a former Representative of district 37 told the group, “We’re not radicals, we’re long range planners. And we need your help.”

(SALEM) - The National Weather Service has issued a snow advisory for the Northern Oregon Cascades, Cascades in Lane County, South Washington Cascades, Government Camp, Detroit, Santiam Pass, Mckenzie Bridge, Oakridge, Willamette Pass, Coldwater Ridge Visitors Center, and Mount St. Helens.

Lowering snow levels accompanied by accumulating snow expected over the south Washington and north and central Oregon Cascades this week snow levels are expected to fall across the South Washington and north and central Oregon Cascades this week with a series of colder systems expected to bring increasing snow accumulations across the Cascades that will likely affect holiday travel.

Salem Hospital Joins Effort to Fight Local Meth Epidemic

Led by Senators Courtney and Winters, members of the Blue Ribbon Task Force also are working to secure $100,000 from the Legislative Emergency Board when it meets later this month.

(SALEM) - Few in Marion County are as close to the front lines of the meth epidemic as the physicians and staff at Salem Hospital.

From the emergency room to the birthing center, it is impossible to escape the reach of this devastating drug. This week, in an effort to combat the problem, the hospital made a $25,000 contribution to a new multi-agency law enforcement strike force charged with combating meth.

Oregon Selling Bonds Again

The State’s bond calendar for the remainder of the 2005-07 biennium is full of projects authorized in the last legislative session, including prison construction, housing, transportation, energy loans, and home loans for veterans.

(SALEM) - State Treasurer Randall Edwards has announced that the State of Oregon is back in the bond market after the defeat of Ballot Measure 48 at the ballot box November 7th.

Because of the uncertainty and potential financial impact of Measure 48, on September 1st Treasurer Edwards had suspended $1.3 billion in state bond sales pending the outcome of the election.

Oregon PUC to Consider Ten-Digit Dialing Plan For Northern Oregon Coast

The PUC says the northern Oregon coast is running out of 503 area code telephone numbers.

(SALEM) - The Oregon Public Utility Commission is scheduled to consider a proposal to implement a ten-digit dialing plan for the northern Oregon coast Tuesday morning in Salem.

The North American Numbering Plan Administrator (NANPA) currently projects that 14 northern coastal telephone exchanges will run out of new telephone numbers in the 503 area code within 2 years.

After that time there will not be any remaining telephone numbers to issue to customers in the 503 area code.

Under the industry proposal new numbers will instead have a 971 prefix, as is the currently the case for the rest of the 503 area code.

If approved by the commission, the industry will need six months beginning in May of 2007 to begin network preparation and implement customer education.

The commission will assist in this effort with open houses to distribute educational materials along with the phone companies.

Beginning in October of 2007 customers will be in a permissive time period in which both seven-digit and ten-digit calls will be connected.

Effective April 30th, 2008 only ten-digit dialed calls will go through.

One Dead in Crash Near Aurora

The cause of the crash is still under investigation.

(AURORA) - On Friday, Marion County Sheriff's Office Deputies responded to a reported motorcycle vs van crash at the intersection of Ehlen Road and Boones Ferry Rd NE near the city of Aurora.

The crash caused the intersection to be closed down for over six hours while members of the Marion County Multi Agency CRASH investigation team investigated the incident.

Tim King arrived in Afghanistan Thursday to report stories on Oregon troops. This story chronicles his first few hours “in country”, in his own words.

(KABUL, Afghanistan) - On the ground in Bagram, Afghanistan, I was fortunate to catch a ride to Camp Phoenix in Kabul, about 70 minutes away.

This was my initial destination, the home of the 41st Combat Brigade of the U.S. Army, and home for now to many soldiers from The Oregon National Guard.

These soldiers were a mix of new arrivals and returning troops. Some had been on leave, others were showing up for their second tour in Afghanistan. The trip to Camp Phoenix in Kabul is over an extremely rough road, one considered to be among the better routes in this Islamic country.
