Santa Central to Spread Cheer to Foster Children in Marion and Polk Counties

Increasing numbers of children are being rescued from meth houses as a result of anti-methamphetamine initiatives by law enforcement and the Marion County District Attorney’s Office.

(SALEM) - The Marion County Sheriff’s Office, in partnership with the Marion Polk Foster Parents Association, announces the start of the annual “Santa Central” program.

Survey Says Oregon 8th Graders Who Drink Pick Hard Liquor over Beer

Contrary to popular belief, beer is not No. 1 alcoholic beverage consumed by teens who drink.

(SALEM) - A new statewide survey of Oregon eighth-and 11th-graders reports disturbing data about the middle-schoolers' underage drinking -- but also some good news for parents.

The Healthy Teens survey conducted annually by the Oregon Department of Human Services found increased rates of binge drinking among eighth-graders, a larger share of eighth-graders saying alcohol is easy to obtain and significant numbers at both grade levels reporting negative consequences of underage drinking.

More than 13 percent of eighth-graders reported having engaged in binge drinking.

(SALEM) - I've had wonderful support in preparing for a trip to Afghanistan where I will report on the lives of Oregon soldiers serving at war. As I write this, I am less than 12 hours away from that trip to the airport and it is an exciting time.

While everyone has been supportive, I have had those who ask me if I have lost my mind, and I expected that to a degree. I remember similar thoughts when I decided to go sky diving for a news story. Why would you jump from a perfectly good airplane? Why would you leave a wonderful place like Oregon and go to a war in Afghanistan?

Train Derails and Hits Home in Albany

The home was not destroyed, and the family and their six cats and three dogs were allowed to return after the train car was removed.

(ALBANY) - A freight train derailed in Albany early Sunday morning with one of the derailed cars striking a local home. Albany Fire Spokesperson Wanda Omdahl says the 7:00 AM incident could have been much worse, "We arrived to discover that 8 train cars had derailed and hit the home located at 739 SE 6th. The residents of the home were present at the time but no one was injured."

She says the family evacuated along with about six other residents because live wires down onto their home after the train cares derailed and knocked out a power pole.

The Keizer Police Department is offering up to a $500 Reward for information leading to arrest and conviction

(KEIZER) - Keizer Police were called to investigate a criminal mischief call early Sunday morning in the Gubser Neighborhood area, on Keizer’s Miracle of Christmas Route. Shortly after the first call at 8:00 AM, a second victim made a report from the same neighborhood.

Keizer Police say that after arriving, an officer started to notice numerous other vehicles that were parked in front of homes and had damage.

All told, a total of 23 vehicles were damaged during the early morning hours and in each case, the front windshield or rear window was shattered out.

Two Juveniles Arrested in Canby Gang Fight

The otherwise quiet Oregon farm town has been dealing with escalating gang activity.

(CANBY) - Canby Police say two juveniles were arrested over a gang fight that occurred in Canby at about 2:49 PM Thursday. The fight was at the intersection of SE Township Rd and S Lupine Street.

Canby Police Officer Chris Mead says a 15-year old male that has local gang ties and a 13-year old male associated with a different and possibly rival gang, were arrested for Disorderly Conduct and lodged at the Clackamas County Juvenile Department.
