2005 Oregon Hospital Quality Data Released

(SALEM) - The Office for Oregon Health Policy and Research Monday released the 2005 Hospital Quality Indicators, which is the state's second annual web-based report on death rates in hospitals for selected procedures and medical conditions.

Oregon Governor Kulongoski praised the report, and said it reflects his commitment to improving the quality of health care Oregonians receive and making health care more affordable. "This report enables people to compare hospitals' performance with the medical conditions and procedures that relate to them personally," the Governor said.

Three Counties Added to Oregon’s Mental Health Supported-Employment Initiative

The three counties, Marion, Deschutes, and Malheur, are being added to Josephine, Lane, Polk and Washington counties, which already have helped hundreds of people with mental illness go to work as custodians, cashiers, linemen, drywall installers, service-station attendants and in other occupations.

(SALEM) - A state initiative to help Oregonians with severe psychiatric disabilities get jobs has added Marion, Deschutes, and Malheur counties, bringing to seven the number of participating counties.

The initiative seeks to reduce unemployment among Oregonians with severe mental illness, whose jobless rate was 82 percent in 2004 and mirrored national estimates of 80 percent to 90 percent.

Police Investigate Drive-By Shooting in Canby Oregon

(CANBY) - Residents in Canby reported hearing two gunshots and a vehicle driving away at 1:49 AM Monday morning at 282 S Knott Street.

Canby Police officers responding to the report of a drive by shooting recovered three rounds from the apartment. Two rounds were located inside the apartment lodged in a couch and a third round was located lodged in a step near the front door.

Albany Oregon Man Arrested in Child Pornography Case

The arrest of David Brown ended a two-week investigation into allegations that he had downloaded and stored large amounts of child pornography onto his personal computer.

(ALBANY) - On Friday, Albany Police Detectives arrested 44-year old Albany resident David Jonathan Brown on 25 counts of Encouraging Child Sexual Abuse in the First Degree and lodged him in the Linn County Jail.

Albany Police Detectives seized the computer and numerous DVD's and, pursuant to a search warrant, located images of child pornography.

Threat Raises Security at South Salem High Again Tuesday

Parents have to make a choice whether to send their South Salem students to school for a second day this week.

(SALEM, Oregon) - School officials are maintaining higher security measures at South Salem High School following the discovery of another threatening message.

Families of South Salem students have been receiving phone calls from an automated system warning that a threat has been made against the school for Monday, now the calls have come through a second time advising that another threat exists for Tuesday.

Suspect Sought in Robbery of South Salem Safeway

The suspect claimed to have a gun in his pocket but did not display a weapon police said.

(SALEM) - Salem police are asking for the public’s help in locating a suspect who robbed a Safeway grocery store Friday night in South Salem.

According police, a Safeway employee said a man walked into the store at 3285 Commercial St. SE about 7:45 PM and demanded money.

The suspect is described as white and in his early 40s.

(CORVALLIS) - The College of Forestry at Oregon State University now has a student enrollment of more than 600, about 15,000 acres of college forests, 5,500 graduates and annual expenditures of more than $26 million, including 46 percent from grants and contracts.

The first degree program that began in 1906, however, was more modest.

There were four students in the first graduating class at what was then called Oregon Agricultural College, including T.J. Starker, a pioneer in the development of the Oregon forest products industry and whose family later sponsored the Starker Lecture Series that is prominent to this day.
