Task Force on Salem River Crossing Project to Meet Thursday

The task force of 21 citizens was appointed by the City of Salem and ODOT to help develop recommendations for river crossing solutions.

(SALEM) - A task force of area stakeholders that will consider the Salem River Crossing Project will meet from 5:30 to 7:30 PM on Thursday, in the Mt. Jefferson Room at Oregon Department of Transportation Region 2 headquarters, located at 455 Airport Road SE in Salem, Building B.

The Salem River Crossing Project is being conducted by the City of Salem and ODOT to develop solutions for crossing the Willamette River in the Salem-Keizer metropolitan area that meet transportation needs, are compatible with the built and natural environments and have broad community and regional support.

MU Study Identifies Enzyme Responsible for Brain Deterioration in Alzheimer’s Patients

University of Missouri-Columbia researchers hope findings lead to a medical breakthrough.

(COLUMBIA, Mo.) - In a recent study, researchers at the University of Missouri-Columbia identified an enzyme that is responsible for the deterioration of brain function for people with Alzheimer’s disease. The study will be published in the Oct. 25th edition of the Journal of Neuroscience.

The research team’s work focused on amyloid-beta peptide, a common neuron killing toxin found in the brains of Alzheimer’s patients, and astrocytes, which supports neurons and is the major cell in the brain.

Oregon Average Gas Price Still Among Nation`s Highest, But Breaks Through the $2.50/Gallon Barrier

Oregon’s statewide average is below $2.50, and even Medford-Ashland average price is below that threshold. Expect prices to continue to fall as Thanksgiving approaches.

(SALEM) - Oregon's statewide average price for a gallon of regular gasoline finally fell below the $2.50 mark, and now stands at $2.48, down more than 6-cents during the past week. The decline has slowed somewhat for the national average price which is currently $2.20.

The week's most notable price reduction in Oregon's four measured metropolitan areas came in Medford-Ashland where the average price fell by almost ten-cents per gallon.

Oregon AG Announces First Hollywood Movie Company to Include Anti-Smoking Message on DVD Release

(SALEM) - Attorney General Hardy Myers today announced that The Weinstein Company is the first motion picture company to insert anti-smoking public service announcements (PSAs) in DVDs in which smoking is depicted.

The Weinstein Company was responding to a September 2006 letter to Hollywood’s 13 major motion picture companies, which was signed by Myers and the Attorneys General from 40 other states. The December release of “Clerks II,” the Weinstein Company’s upcoming DVDs, which are distributed by TWC’s exclusive home entertainment distributor

$10 Million Gift Opens New Chapter at Willamette University

The $10 million contribution brings the Campaign for Willamette total to $85.1 million, which is 68 percent of the campaign goal of $125 million.

(SALEM) - The largest personal donation in the history of Willamette University will assist the University in constructing a $16 million, 46,000-square-foot academic building that will house the departments of mathematics, computer science, rhetoric and media studies, as well as digital arts and film studies programs, beginning in the fall of 2009. The building will also house the University's arts and technology program.

The $10 million total includes an $8 million gift from an anonymous donor, plus a $2 million contribution from the University's Board of Trustees. The remaining $6 million will be raised through ongoing fund-raising efforts.

(BEIJING, China) - The world’s natural ecosystems are being degraded at a rate. unprecedented in human history, according to a report released Tuesday by WWF, the global conservation organization.

Already resources are depleting, with the report showing that vertebrate species populations have declined by about one-third in the 33 years from 1970 to 2003.
