Make Safety Top Priority In Halloween Preparations

With Halloween just around the corner, parents are reminded to be extra careful if their children will be trick-or-treating in neighborhood streets.

(SALEM) - “Pedestrian traffic fatalities are a great risk for children everyday, and during Halloween, the threat increases four-fold,” said AAA Oregon Public Affairs Director Elliott Eki. “Some Halloween masks and costumes make it difficult for children to see and to be seen, so parents must focus on safety when preparing their ghosts and goblins for trick-or-treating.”

Daylight Saving Time ends Sunday, October 29th, so night skies will darken an hour earlier. Darkness, the increased number of children on the streets and motorists can create a dangerous combination. To help reduce risks for young pedestrians, AAA suggests these basic Halloween safety tips for motorists, parents and trick-or-treaters.

Bradley, Wyden Call For New Tax Reform Push on Eve of Election

Celebrating the 20th anniversary of the 1986 Tax Reform Act, the Senators see lessons for bipartisan reform.

(WASHINGTON, D.C.) - Twenty years after the last major tax reform act was signed into law, former U.S. Senator Bill Bradley (D-NJ) and Senator Ron Wyden (D-OR) Monday teamed up to urge President George W. Bush to join Congress in once again enacting real tax reform for the American people.

Bradley, the original senator to push for tax reform and author of legislation that was a model for the 1986 Tax Reform Act, remains one of the nation’s leading advocates for a fairer and simpler tax code. Wyden is the author of the Fair Flat Tax Act, a tax reform package which calls for a simplified tax code to benefit middle-income Americans.

Salem, Keizer Chambers of Commerce Sign Up For Drug-Free Workplace Initiative

The drug-free workplace initiative is an element of the Oregon Business Plan, a 12-point strategy that state business leaders have crafted to strengthen the state’s commerce, payrolls and economy. DHS provides funding and staff support.

(SALEM) - A statewide initiative aimed at tripling the number of Oregon employers who adopt and enforce drug-free workplace policies by the end of 2008 is adding seven more communities as pilot sites.

The Oregon Department of Human Services initiative is adding two Portland business organizations and the chambers of commerce of Astoria-Warrenton, Cannon Beach, Keizer, McMinnville, Salem and Seaside.

Interactive Talks on Coastal Ghosts Given in Newport and Seaside

It’s a paranormal walk down the coast, covering just about every town from Astoria to Florence.

(NEWPORT) - Andre’ Hagestedt, editor of BeachConnection.net and all around coastal character and conspiracy theorist, will give two interactive talks on “Oregon Coast Ghosts and the Paranormal,” happening in two different ends of the coast.

The presentation will include spooky stories about lighthouses, the legends that are simply laughable, and a host of tales that defy category, covering ghosts, poltergeists, UFO’s, spiritual spots, conspiracy theories, sea monsters and myths that were debunked, as well as unusual historical tidbits and weird science that relate to the subject.

Parents Invited to Child Sexual Abuse Prevention Trainings This Week

The training is titled “Recognizing Child Molesters - A New Approach to Protecting Children”

(SALEM) - Many girls and boys will be sexually abused prior to their 18th birthday. The offenders will typically be someone they already know - perhaps a relative, friend, neighbor or one of the many volunteers and professionals who come in contact with them every day.

Few offenders are caught because they work just as hard deceiving adults as they do seducing and silencing their child victims.

Fire Evacuates Salem Restaurant

No injuries were reported.

(SALEM) - A fire led to the evacuation of approximately 55 people at The Ram Border Café & Brewery in Salem Sunday evening. Salem firefighters responded after a kitchen chef saw flames and smoke coming from a kitchen wall.

Firefighters arriving on scene say they found fire inside the wall and heavy smoke in the employees' north corridor to the Brewery.

South Salem Street Improvements Free to Taxpayers

Developer-funded street projects account for approximately 65 percent of street construction in Salem.

(SALEM) - Developers of a number of South Salem subdivisions will be providing street improvements this fall that will ultimately improve traffic flow and safety at no cost to taxpayers.

These South Salem projects are a few examples of street improvements that the City's development regulations require to be constructed and funded by developers.
Southern Heights Subdivision and Wallace Ridge Estates are two subdivision projects that will extend Mildred Lane SE from Lone Oak Road SE to Liberty Road S.

Hundreds including the Patriot Guard Riders gathered to say their final goodbyes to a well known Sprague High graduate.

(SALEM) - An Oregon family said goodbye to a local hero Saturday. Derek Jones, a graduate of Sprague High School in Salem, was a U.S. Marine who died while conducting combat operations against enemy forces in Al Anbar province, Iraq.
