37 Oregon Citizen Soldiers to Return to Oregon From Kuwait Saturday

The company managed casualty reporting theater-wide, and provided technical level expertise over the theater's personnel accounting.

(SALEM) - Thirty-seven Oregon National Guard soldiers of the 41st Personnel Services Company, based out of Salem, will return Saturday from a one-year deployment in Kuwait.

The soldiers are expected to arrive at the Portland International Airport on Southwest Airlines Flight 605 at approximately 2:20 PM.

Family members and military officials will greet them at the airport. The soldiers will go through demobilization processing in Salem October 23rd to 24th.

Barbecue Reignites Starting House Fire in Salem

Residents should always ensure that gas powered barbecues are in good working order and safe to operate.

(SALEM) - A malfunctioning gas powered barbecue caused the rear deck of a Salem house fire to ignite in flames Friday afternoon, even though the grill had been shut down for two hours.

Salem Fire Department Spokesperson Chris Riffle says crews responded to a call for flames coming from the back of the house at 3250 Bell St NE at 3:31 PM on Friday. The call brought the response of Engines, 1 Ladder Truck and a Battalion Chief.

Riffle says arriving firefighters discovered flames coming from a gas barbecue on the backyard deck and quickly extinguished the fire before it could extend into the home.

The memorial is the result of the efforts of Clay and MJ Kesterson whose son Erik Kesterson, an Army Blackhawk helicopter pilot, was shot down and killed while fighting in Iraq in 2003.

New Study Finds Most Oregonians Pay For Federal Tax Cuts That Only Benefit the Rich

(SILVERTON) - A new report finds that all but the wealthiest Oregonians will be worse off because of tax cuts enacted by Congress at the behest of the Bush Administration. The study, by the non-partisan Citizens for Tax Justice, analyzes the net impact on Oregonians at various income levels of deficit- financed tax reductions approved over the last six years.

“This report gives Oregonians compelling reason to insist on significant changes in our federal tax policy,” said Janet Bauer, policy analyst with the Oregon Center for Public Policy, a public policy research institute based in Silverton. “Since only extremely wealthy Oregonians will see a net gain from the tax cuts, most Oregonians should be concerned that they are helping to pay for tax cuts from which they ultimately do not benefit,” she added.

(SALEM) - A state transportation worker in Salem became sick Friday morning while working around material that had been collected from a road spill just ourside of Newberg

Workers from the Oregon Department of transportation responded to the spill at Highway 240 just outside of Newberg, cleaned up the liquid product on the highway using absorbent pads, and brought it back to their laboratory at 800 Airport Road SE to be tested.

Wal-Mart Rolls Out $4 Generic Prescription Drug Program in Oregon

Wal-Mart originally planned to introduce the program in as many states as possible beginning in 2007, but customer demand led the company to accelerate the launch.

(SALEM) - Wal-Mart announced that starting Thursday it is rolling out its $4 generic prescription program in 14 additional states.

With the announcement, the $4 generic prescription program will be now be available in an additional 1,264 stores throughout Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, Delaware, Illinois, Indiana, Nevada, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, Oregon, Texas and Vermont.

Marion County Sheriff’s Deputies Receive Awards From State Marine Board

The Sheriff’s Office program was one of five agencies nominated from across the state for the Program of the Year award.

(SALEM) - On Wednesday, the Oregon State Marine Board presented awards at their annual Marine Board Post Season Marine Safety and Law Enforcement Conference in Bend.

The Marion County Sheriff’s Office Marine Patrol received awards for Most Improved Yearly Program and the Board’s Education Award.

Deputy Dave Zahn, the Sheriff’s Office’s only full time Marine Enforcement Deputy, received the award for outstanding Boating Under the Influence enforcement. Sergeant Tim Steele, who supervises the program, was the co-winner of the Manager of the Year award.

Portland Woman Arrested After Stealing Passerby’s Vehicle

The victim learned the hard way, don’t pick-up strangers.

(CORVALLIS) - Corvallis police arrested a Portland woman on Wednesday after she stole a vehicle from a passing motorist she asked to give her a ride.

Police say 33-year-old Andrea Even got into the man’s car and told him she had a gun.

She ordered the man to surrendered his vehicle and made him get out of the vehicle near the intersection of SW Monroe Ave and SW 4th Street.

Even then drove west on Philomath Boulevard, continuing through Philomath onto westbound Hwy 20; meanwhile, the Corvallis Regional Communications Center received several calls from citizens regarding her erratic driving.
