International Researchers Discover Rich Methane Field Off The Coast of India

Researchers said the energy potential is still unknown.

(CORVALLIS) - An international team of scientists looking for gas hydrates off the coast of India has discovered a pair of methane hydrate reservoirs buried in the sediment below the Bay of Bengal, and though the idea of a new energy source is tantalizing, researchers say the technology does not yet exist to make these reservoirs commercially feasible.

A similar field of gas hydrates was found off the coast of Oregon a few years ago, said Marta Torres, a marine geochemist at Oregon State University and an investigator on the India and Oregon expeditions.

Man Missing in Sweet Home Area Located (UPDATE)

Friends have stated the missing man may suffer from dementia at times.

(SWEET HOME) - Linn County Sheriff Tim Mueller reports an elderly Sweet Home man who had been missing since Sunday has been found safe this afternoon.

R D White, age 94, was found with his vehicle at approximately 3:30 this afternoon on the Ames Creek 600 line, a logging road in east Linn County.

91% Percent of Classes in Oregon Are Taught by Highly Qualified Teachers

94% of classes in the Salem-Keizer School District were taught by teachers who met the federal designation, up from 90% in 2004-05.

(SALEM) - State Schools Superintendent Susan Castillo announced Wednesday that 91% of all classes taught in Oregon’s public schools during 2005-06 have a highly qualified teacher, according to the federally required definition under the No Child Left Behind Act.

There are 38 Oregon school districts that have reached 100% of their classes taught by highly qualified teachers, and more than half of school districts made gains in the percentage of core classes taught by highly qualified teachers.

Salem Police, S-K School District Want to Remind Parents of Daytime Curfew For Kids

Youth under 18 years of age seen off campus during school hours may be stopped and questioned by police officers.

(SALEM) - Salem police would like to remind parents that Salem has a daytime curfew for kids under the age of 18.

The Salem-Keizer School District is working with law enforcement and the Juvenile Department to keep kids from skipping school.

Volunteers Needed to Build Afghan-Iraqi Freedom War Memorial

A chance to give something back to the community while honoring those who died in war.

(SALEM) - Volunteers are needed to construct the Afghan-Iraqi Freedom War Memorial being built behind the Oregon Department of Veterans' Affairs, 700 Summer St. NE, in Salem.

The memorial will honor the sacrifices of those Oregon service members who have lost their lives during Operations Iraqi Freedom and Enduring Freedom.

The Afghan-Iraqi Freedom War Memorial will be dedicated on Veterans Day, November 11th, 2006. Volunteers are needed to ensure the memorial is completed in time for the dedication.

Former Dow Chemical Chairman Pledges $3 Million to Oregon State

(CORVALLIS) - Robert Lundeen, the retired chairman of Dow Chemical, has pledged $3 million to support an array of programs at Oregon State University, a gift which reflects his lifelong pursuit of learning that began with his OSU education.

Lundeen’s donation will fund science and engineering scholarships, create faculty development awards for OSU scientists and librarians, and provide additional resources to the College of Oceanic and Atmospheric Sciences and to the College of Science.

Department of Defense to Resume Mandatory Anthrax Vaccinations

The policy also allows personnel previously immunized against anthrax, who are no longer deployed to higher threat areas, to receive follow-up vaccine doses and booster shots on a voluntary basis.

(WASHINGTON, D.C.) - The Department of Defense announced late Tuesday a resumption of the mandatory Anthrax Vaccine Immunization Program (AVIP) for military personnel, emergency-essential DoD civilians and contractors, based on defined geographic areas or roles.

The under secretary of defense for personnel and readiness will issue implementing instructions to the military services for resuming the mandatory vaccination program within 30 to 60 days.

For the most part, mandatory vaccinations are limited to military units designated for homeland bioterrorism defense and to U.S. forces assigned to the U.S. Central Command area of responsibility and Korea.
