Why does such an important federal agency continue to make life so difficult and unfair for it's citizens?

(SALEM) - This is a story about an individual who made the mistake of not having all his “I's” dotted or his “T's” crossed. This man and his significant other have lived together for almost ten years. He is an average blue-collar worker and she is a stay-at-home mom. They have had two children together. One is almost six years of age and the other is seven.

For the last nine years this blue-collar worker has provided a home for his significant other and has filed taxes claiming her as a dependent. When their children were born, he claimed them as his dependants, also.

Large Rock Punctures Fuel Tank Causing Diesel Spill on Highway 101 Near Newport

State Police asks anyone traveling on area highways to pay attention for large rocks that could be lodged between vehicle tires or lying on the pavement.

(NEWPORT) - Another incident involving an airborne rock in the Newport area resulted in a punctured diesel fuel tank and spill on Highway 101 in the south end area of Otter Crest.

Approximately 70 gallons of diesel leaked onto the highway and shoulder area before it was contained.

This is the second time in recent days that a rock on the roadway caused a major incident; last week a woman died after a rock from an unconfirmed source struck the windshield of the pickup she was riding in, striking her in the head and neck.

Flags to be Flown at Half-Staff Friday and Monday in Honor of Two Oregon Soldiers Killed in Iraq

(SALEM) - Oregon Governor Ted Kulongoski has ordered all flags at public institutions be flown at half-staff Friday in memory of 32-year-old Pfc. Dean R. Bright, of Roseburg and on Monday in memory of 22-year-old Cpl. Chase A. Haag, of Portland.

Bright died -- alongside three other soldiers -- in Taji, Iraq, on Oct. 4th. Bright was assigned to the 7th Squadron, 10th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Brigade, 4th Infantry Division out of Fort Hood, Texas.

State Report Card: All Salem-Keizer Schools Are Satisfactory or Higher

Five schools improved their rating from the previous year, including McKay High School and Parrish Middle School who went from “low” to “satisfactory”.

(SALEM) - State Report Cards were released Wednesday and show that 100% of Salem-Keizer rated schools received a satisfactory or higher mark for 2005-06.

Veterans to be Honored at Flags of our Fathers Premier

As a sign of gratitude for their service in the military, the veterans and members of the military attending the screening will receive a commemorative DVD produced by the NCHA featuring rare documentary footage taken on Iwo Jima during the famous WWII battle.

(BEAVERTON) - Veterans and special guests will be able to attend a private screening of Clint Eastwood and Stephen Spielberg’s new film about the history of the raising of the flag on Iwo Jima, “Flags of our Fathers” on Friday, October 20th.

The event begins at 8:00 AM at the Century Theaters at Cedar Hills Crossing, 3200 SW Hocken, in Beaverton.

Salem Marine Dies in Iraq

Local Marine is one of three killed October 8th in Iraq. Derek Jones was a graduate of Sprague High School.

(AL ANBAR, Iraq) - The Department of Defense announced today the deaths of three Marines who were supporting Operation Iraqi Freedom. One is a local high school graduate from Salem.

Lance Cpl. Derek W. Jones, 21, of Salem, Oregen, died Oct. 8th from wounds received while conducting combat operations against enemy forces in Al Anbar province, Iraq.

Salem Police Department Fraud Tip of The Week: Stolen Business Computer - What Should I Do?

Historically, business burglars have targeted items that could be put to personal use, sold or traded for drugs.

(SALEM) - Two weeks ago, seven computers were stolen from another government agency in Salem.

The agency manages a state program affecting about 4,500 high school students in three counties: Yamhill, Polk and Marion. The office was not protected by an alarm system. The stolen computers had security features activated, so any information on the computers should not be viewable to common identity thieves.

The agency has an off-site secured server that stores the type of personal information sought by identity thieves. The thieves will not have access to the server using the stolen computers.

The agency will be viewing information uploaded from the server to each computer to see if any student data was on any of the computers at the time of the theft. Any affected student will receive a letter in the mail.

Benton And Linn County Health Organizations Team Up to Provide Flu Vaccinations

Flu vaccine supplies are expected to be adequate for this year’s flu season and no shortages are expected.

(CORVALLIS) - The Flu Vaccine Coalition, a group of Benton and Linn County public health officials, health care providers and pharmacies, is teaming up again this year to distribute flu vaccinations for residents.

“The Centers for Disease Control expect the flu vaccination supply to reach 100 million doses, which is the highest in history," said Charlie Fautin, deputy administrator of the Benton County Health Department. "We urge everyone over 6 months of age to get vaccinated against the flu every year."

Although most people recover from the flu within several days, some are more susceptible to complications from the flu due to age, health conditions or other factors. The following populations should be among the first to receive flu vaccinations:

(SALEM) - The $24.72 million Salem Fire General Obligation Bond Measure would:

Add two new fire stations to the community’s emergency response system; replace two existing fire stations; upgrade remaining stations with earthquake strengthening and backup power; and replace the existing fleet of fire trucks.

Nine fire stations currently serve Salem. Salem’s last fire station was built in 1982.
