Chemeketa Hopes Voters Will Pass $89 Million Bond Levy

Chemeketa is part of the 82 percent of national nursing programs that lack the capacity to meet enrollment demand.

(SALEM) - Chemeketa Community College’s Board of Education has approved a resolution asking voters to approve an $89 million bond levy in November that will finance capital construction and improvements to existing buildings.

If voters approve the levy, the estimated cost to taxpayers would be 27-cents per $1,000 of assessed value. For a taxpayer with a $150,000 home, the estimated cost would be $40.50 per year.

“We believe that Chemeketa is making a real difference to the citizens of Salem, and these facilities will help meet our area’s education and training needs over the next several years,” said JoAnne Beilke, Chairperson of the board.

Aircraft Crashes Into New York Apartment High Rise

The Oregon Air National Guard has launched two F-15's to oversee our own state's security, though authorities say it appears that the crash was not an act of terrorism.

(NEW YORK) - An aircraft has slammed into a New York City Apartment High Rise.

The accident occurred just before noon west coast time.

According to media reports the address of the building is 524 E. 72nd Street.

That is a 50-story condominium tower built in 1986 and located nearby Sotheby's Auction House.

Marion County Sheriff’s Detectives Investigate Injured Infant, Child’s Death Likely

Investigators need to talk to the man that drove Mrs. Olmos and her child to Salem Hospital.

(SALEM) - On Friday, shortly after 8:00 PM a four month old infant was taken to the Salem Hospital Emergency Room by his mother, Raquel Salizar-Olmos, where he is currently receiving treatment for multiple trauma type injuries over his body. Mrs. Olmos told investigators that she was at her home at 4647 Indiana Ave NE in Salem when she discovered that her infant son had stopped breathing.

Application Deadline Nears For Salem Public Library`s 2nd Annual Battle of the Bands

The event is scheduled for 7:00 PM Friday, December 1st.

(SALEM) - The Salem Public Library is looking for the best local bands for its 2nd annual Battle of the Bands competition. The event was a sell-out show in 2005, giving six area bands excellent exposure and a chance to win new fans.

Attempted Robbery Suspect Sought

The suspect fled on foot. No money was taken from the manager of the local Rent-A-Center.

(STAYTON) - Stayton police are asking for the public help in locating a suspect who attempted to rob a Rent-A-Center store manager Tuesday morning.

According to police, the suspect attempted to use pepper spray on the manager, but fortunately he was unable to. The suspect fled on foot, and no money was taken from the manager.

The suspect is described as a male is his 20s to 30s, 5’10, and 170 pounds, wearing a long-sleeved gray paid shirt and black-colored nylon pantyhose over his hear.

(JEFFERSON) - The Great Oregon Pumpkin Patch and Corn Maze Company in Jefferson was established in 2004 and provides family focused entertainment. The farm is owned and operated by Iverson Family Farms.

Iverson Family Farms is a diversified agricultural operation. They cultivate a variety of crops on their 3000 acres. Crops include grass seed, vegetables, tulips and daffodils.

Iverson Family Farms has also presented the Woodburn Tulip Festival for 21 years. The Pumpkin Patch and Corn Maze is their specialty. The pumpkin patch and corn maze brought in approximately four thousand visitors in 2004 and ten thousand in 2005.

Dead Bird Found in Benton County Tests Positive For West Nile Virus

In Oregon, the first reported case of WNV was in 2004. This year, DHS has reported 62 human cases of WNV.

(CORVALLIS) - Benton County public health officials announced Tuesday that Oregon State University Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory has confirmed a dead bird has tested positive for the West Nile Virus.

Oregon to Pursue Nation’s First Statewide Online Permitting Service

“Oregon’s first-in-the-nation statewide e-permitting will save businesses time and money,” Governor Kulongoski said.

(SALEM) - The next step in Governor Kulongoski’s regulatory streamlining initiative will make purchasing a construction permit or scheduling an inspection as easy as a few clicks of your computer mouse.

The state’s Department of Consumer and Business Services Building Codes Division is partnering with business and local government to develop an online one-stop construction e-permitting system -- www.BuildingPermits.Oregon.gov.

The new effort would build on the success of the department’s existing e-permitting project and expand the range of building department services currently offered online.

Retired Salem Police Dog IKE Passes Away

He was used over 1800 times, resulting in more than 850 captures, five of them in one night.

(SALEM) - "IKE", a great Salem police dog, retired from service in May 2005 and passed away on October 7th.

IKE was a legend in K-9 circles, having worked 10 years with his partner, Officer Bruce Fineran.

Although IKE was 13 years old, he never lost his excitement for his work. Up until the day he retired he would jump the eight steps down from his kennel to run to the police car. Near the end the landing sucked but he was still ready to go to work.

Ike retired in May 2005 after it was discovered that he had a heart problem.

The vet did not think he would live 6 months. He enjoyed his life as a family pet and thanks to the care provided by Bruce's family, especially his daughter Jenny, he proved the vet wrong. IKE was buried in the mountains where he loved to go play with the family.
