Never before has technology afforded the connection to our troops like today. Several compelling stories about Oregon soldiers will be produced every week in Afghanistan and published on Salem-News.com.

(SALEM) - Photojournalist/Reporter Tim King, of Salem-News.com and formerly of KATU in Portland, is going to Afghanistan to produce stories about Oregon troops.

This local news mission will cause people to see war from a different vantage point in the coming weeks.

The community is invited to Eola Hills Winery (501 South Pacific Highway 99W, Rickreall, OR) on Friday, October 13th from 5:00 to­ 8:00 PM to support Dispatches from Afghanistan.

Treasurer Introduces New Literacy and Financial Education Program for Children

Randall Edwards says a little reading could mean money toward a college savings plan.

(SALEM) - State Treasurer Randall Edwards on Thursday will kick off Reading is an Investment, a new literacy and financial education program for elementary school children. He will visit schools across the state throughout October to promote this long-term investment in the financial education of Oregon’s young students.

“Financial literacy is no longer the language of accountants and investment professionals,” said Treasurer Edwards. “People of all walks of life need to understand the basics of money. Reading is an Investment is a fun and rewarding way to encourage children to read, and to start building the foundation of basic financial knowledge that they can use throughout their lives.”

Fire Damages North Salem Home

Salem firefighters were busy this morning handling multiple fires.

(SALEM) - Salem firefighters were dispatched to a house fire at 630 Tryon Ave NE this morning at 10:41 AM. Fire trucks from the Salem Fire Department and Keizer Fire District responded.

Fire Spokesman Bill Holmstrom says arriving firefighters found and quickly extinguished a fire in the living room of the home. No one was at home at the time the fire started.

Several small rabbits perished in the fire.

The cause of the fire was determined to be a halogen lamp that had tipped over onto a couch. Damage to the home and contents is estimated at $40,000. There were no injuries to firefighters or other people.

Fuel Prices Continue Downward Trend; Oregon Average Price Now Nation`s 5th Highest

Gas prices are still falling. The national avg. down to $2.26, Oregon’s statewide average is 5th highest in nation, at $2.61.

(SALEM) - Fuel prices across the nation generally continue to fall with the national average price for a gallon of regular gasoline now at $2.26, down by slightly more than 4-cents during the past week.

Salem’s average for a gallon of regular is $2.55, trailing the Eugene/Springfield average price of $2.52. Portland drivers are paying $2.57 while gas prices in the Ashland/Medford area are averaging $2.62 a galloon.

Fire in South Salem Leaves Several Families Homeless (UPDATE)

Firefighters are still on the scene and Madronna Road is closed at Commercial. Traffic patterns will remain impacted throughout the day.

(SALEM) - Salem firefighters spent much of the day on the scene of a three-alarm apartment fire at 365 Madrona Ave SE. The fire led to several injuries.

Fire Department Spokesman Bill Holmstrom says the fire quickly spread from one unit to another, but firefighters were able to stop the spread before fire destroyed the entire building.

Five units were directly damaged by fire, while seven more were damaged by heat, smoke, or water. Approximately 50 peopled lived in the building. The occupant of the unit where the fire originated was treated by firefighter/paramedics and transported to Salem Hospital by private vehicle.

UN Secretary-General Deeply Concerned by North Korea Nuclear Test

"The Secretary-General is deeply concerned by the news that the Government of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea has conducted a nuclear test, in spite of repeated worldwide efforts to discourage it from doing so.

This action violates international norms of disarmament and non-proliferation, as well as the current international moratorium on nuclear testing..."

Police Searching For a Man Who Allegedly Exposed Himself Near School Bus Stop

The suspect was driving an older, full-size car, possibly a Cadillac, Lincoln Town Car that was painted with grey primer and had a red cloth top that was peeling away from the metal.

(MOUNT ANGEL) - Mount Angel police are asking for the public’s help in locating a man who allegedly exposed himself in front of children before they boarded a school bus Monday morning.

A woman noticed a man sitting in a car watching children near W Marquam Street and Railroad Avenue.

When the man called her toward his car, and when she approached, she said he was touching his genitals with his pants off.

She alleged that the man made threatening comments toward the children before leaving the area police said.

Oregon Fire Museum in Urgent Need of Assistance

(BROOKS) - Over 677 years of Oregon fire service history is on the verge of becoming homeless.

The board of the Oregon Fire Service Museum was told that space used to house part of the museum's collection is now need for other purposes by its owner.

Google Buys YouTube for $1.65 Billion

The research market firm Hitwise reported that YouTube received 46% of all visits to online video websites in September, compared with 11% for Google.

(MOUNTAIN VIEW, Ca.) - The Internet's largest search engine is joining forces with the most popular site to watch video on the Web. It was confirmed today that Google has agreed to purchase YouTube Inc. for $1.65 billion in stock.

YouTube's fast growing website generates an estimated 100 million videos a day.

New Manual From Oregon DMV Helps Parents Coach Teen Drivers

The “Oregon Parent Guide to Teen Driving” is for parents of teenagers who are getting their first instruction permit.

(SALEM) - Many parents wish their teenage children came with instruction manuals, but they don’t. Perhaps the next best thing is a new manual that helps parents coach their teens in their quest to learn to drive and get an Oregon driver license.

Produced by DMV and the Oregon Department of Transportation’s Safety Division, it is the first parent-teen driving manual published by the department since the “Tuning Up” manual printed six years ago.
