Oregon Guard Contingent Will Travel to Japan

Oregon National Guard citizen soldiers deploy to Japan next week in support of a bilateral exercise with the Japanese army.

(SALEM) - Approximately 240 members of 2nd Battalion, 162nd Infantry will travel to Sekiyama Maneuver Area, Honshu, Japan, to participate in the annual Orient Shield exercise that concludes Oct. 26th.

The unit, which is headquartered in Eugene, will join Japanese soldiers and U.S. soldiers stationed in Japan to enhance U.S./Japan combat readiness, improve bilateral operations between the two armies, promote professional relationships and good will, and demonstrate U.S. resolve to support security interests of friends and allies in the region.

Bridge Research at Oregon State Allows State to Stretch Funds

The bridges of concern, officials say, are found all over the state but are more concentrated in the heavier populated areas of the Willamette Valley and western Oregon. They range from interstate highway to county road bridges.

Falls City Schools Closed Tuesday

Concerns over local paving projects mean a day off for kids and teachers.

(FALLS CITY) - The Falls City Elementary and High School will be closed all day on Tuesday.

School officials say the school closure is due to safety concerns, while crews are paving Prospect Street in the immediate area of the schools.

School at these two Falls City schools will resume on Wednesday with regular hours.

(WASHINGTON, D.C.) - I don't know if I consider myself fortunate to have once witnesses a sub critical nuclear test. There is a certain feeling that goes with this type of work, as I learned one day while reporting news for the Las Vegas NBC station.

In reality nobody actually "witnesses" a sub critical nuclear test because "sub critical" means that the action is happening hundreds of feet below the ground and the effects do not manifest at the top.

The sub critical test I was present for was held at the Nevada Test Site, the broad expanse of Nevada desert that also contains the government's top-secret site at Groom Lake or "Area-51." This test in early 1997 was the first since 1985, when a nuclear test ban treat was enacted.

(SALEM) - Never was there a time in Oregon time when a candidate for Governor has been so openly and continuously antagonistic, obstructive, evasive, and generally “disingenuous” as in this one --do you ?

That last-word was publicly applied in a straightforward announcement yesterday that STAND FOR CHILDREN endorses incumbent Governor Ted Kulongoski for reelection.
