Fire Prevention Week to Focus on Cooking Safety

In 2005, there were 317 cooking-related home fires leading to 35 burn injuries and an estimated $1.7 million in property loss.

(SALEM) - Next week is National Fire Prevention Week. Oregon State Fire Marshal Nancy Orr reminds Oregonians cooking-related fires are preventable.

Oregon's Life Safety Team and the Office of State Fire Marshal (OSFM) are supporting fire departments statewide with materials designed to raise awareness on preventing cooking-related fires and how to safely extinguish them, if they occur.

Wal-Mart Donates $25,000 to Help Launch Marion County’s Meth Strike Force

The money from Wal-Mart will be added to a community-wide fundraising effort kicked off last month.

(SALEM) - Marion County’s groundbreaking effort to combat methamphetamine got a boost Thursday from a national retailer.

Retail giant Wal-Mart delivered a $25,000 check to help launch the county’s law enforcement strike force.

“This is a huge win for the county,” stated Senator Jackie Winters (R-Salem). “The local response has been great and now Wal-Mart takes it to a whole new level.”

Albany Fire Department Treasure Hunt Saturday

The event is fun and educational for the whole family.

(ALBANY) - The Albany Fire Department is holding its annual Treasure Hunt on Saturday.

This year’s activities include:

Station 11 (located at 110 SE Sixth Avenue) a small AFD History Museum, fire engine rides, face painting, and popcorn.

Station 12 (located at 120 34th Avenue) will be taking your pictures in real fire fighting clothes sitting atop an antique fire engine.

(PORTLAND) - Riley Research Associates recently conducted an omnibus survey among likely Oregon voters regarding their opinions on a variety of current issues.

The scientific telephone survey was conducted among 471 randomly selected registered voters throughout the state. A sample of 471 provides results accurate to within +/-4.38% at a 95% level of confidence.

Legislators Want to Re-Open Oak Creek Youth Correctional Facility

The youth prison was closed in 2003 because of state budget cuts.

(ALBANY) - Two mid-valley Legislators want to re-open the Oak Creek Youth Correctional Facility in Albany next year.

State Senator Frank Morse, R-Albany, and Representative Andy Olsen, R-Albany, are proposing that the Oregon Youth Authority move 75 female youth offenders from Hillcrest in Salem and from the Corvallis House to Oak Creek.

The move would free-up beds for boys to move from the MacLaren Youth Correctional Facility in Woodburn to Hillcrest.

Oregon`s 2004-05 Dropout Rate Dips to 4.2%, Salem-Keizer Rate Rises

A total of 7,318 students dropped out of high school during 2004-05, down from 7,864 dropouts in 2003-04.

(SALEM) - The Oregon Department of Education announced Wednesday that Oregon’s statewide dropout rate for the 2004-05 school year was 4.2%, down from 4.6% in 2003-04.

“I won’t be satisfied until Oregon’s dropout rate hits zero,” Castillo said. “Until then, there is good news in this report: dropout rates for all groups decreased. The greatest drop was for African American students, but all student groups showed decreases. Staying in school is fundamental to student success, and it is important that the rate continue to decline.”

Meth Arrest Yields More Than 125 Stolen Items

(KEIZER) - A Keizer man is in custody on over a million and a half-dollars bail after his arrest for possession and sales of meth charges. Jeff Isham with Keizer Police says the arrest concluded a month long drug investigation.

Keizer detectives served a search warrant at 926 Appleblossom Drive NE Wednesday afternoon, due to evidence they had gathered linking Sidney L. Carlson to methamphetamine sales.

Making Sure Firewood Deliveries Measure Up

Firewood has to be sold by the cord, “It’s a volumetric measurement, Nothing else is legal." But just how much is a cord?

(SALEM) - Cooler days and nights are approaching. Fireplaces and wood stoves are getting used again as the thermometer drops. That means people are turning to firewood as a source of heat. This is also the time of year the Oregon Department of Agriculture advises consumers to make sure fuel wood deliveries “stack up”.

“Generally around October and November, people begin thinking about the coming winter months and the cold weather– that’s when they start making purchases of firewood and when we start to hear about it,” says Clark Cooney, assistant administrator of ODA’s Measurement Standards Division.

Auto Dealers Make Right With State After Being Busted for False Credit Offers

Oregon Department of Justice staff found that all the offers of credit were false and consumers were not pre-approved for any loan, and certainly not at the offered terms.

(SALEM) - Attorney General Hardy Myers today filed agreements in Marion and Washington County Circuit Courts with two car dealerships and a direct marketing company for allegedly luring consumers onto automobile sales lots with direct mail flyers containing false offers of credit.

Named in the Assurance of Voluntary Compliance (AVC) filed in Hillsboro are Hillsboro Automotive Group, Inc., doing business as Hillsboro Chrysler Jeep, Larry Miller Chrysler Jeep and Larry Miller Hillsboro Chrysler Jeep and Larry H. Miller Corporation-Oregon, doing business as Honda of St. Johns and Larry Miller Honda of St. Johns. The AVC admits no law violation.
