Salem Man Flees on Foot From Stolen Car – North of Brooks

27-year-old Enrique Aguero pulled the truck into the grass and fled on foot.

(SALEM, Ore.) - Just after 6:30 this morning, Deputies received a call that a blue 1990 Nissan pick-up had been stolen from 4104 46th Ave NE in Salem.

The owner was calling from his cell phone reporting that he was following the truck.

Oregon Guard Personnel Will Deploy to Southern States to Help Customs

All the soldiers and airmen are volunteers who will deploy under Title 32 in a status called "Active Duty for Special Work." The deployment is federally funded.

(SALEM) - The Oregon National Guard will send 35 more volunteer soldiers and airmen to help U.S. Customs and Border Protection under Operation "Jump Start" in four southern border states, the Oregon Military Department announced Tuesday.

Under Operation Jump Start, the federal government has sought volunteers to help with surveillance, civil engineering projects, administrative support, and training along the border with Mexico. The deployment of Oregon Guard personnel will take place under an agreement Governor Ted Kulongoski concluded with the U.S. Department of Defense in July.

Girl Attacked in Wallace Marine Park

At this point, Police do not see a connection with a recent attempted rape involving a minor female on Portland Road.

(SALEM) - Salem Police are investigating the alleged attempted sexual assault of an underage girl that happened around 9:20 PM Monday night at Wallace Marine Park. The victim told police that the attacker was 32-year old William John Elliott, a transient.

Salem Police Sgt Kevin Halvorsen says police arrested Elliott after the girl's report of the assault north of the ball field at Wallace.

Secretary of State Releases Governor Campaign Finance Reports

Republican Candidate Ron Saxton has spent over $2.8 million trying to defeat Democratic incumbent Ted Kulongsoki who has spent just over $638,000 to try and keep Oregon’s top job.

(SALEM) - Oregon Secretary of State Bill Bradbury on Monday, released campaign finance reports filed by the Saxton, Kulongoski, Starrett, and Keating campaigns.

Saxton has raised $3.5 million while Kulongoski has raised just $1.6 million.

Rabid Bat Found In Benton County

This year in Oregon, 18 animals -- including 16 bats and two foxes -- have tested positive for rabies, compared to nine rabid animals in 2005 and seven in 2004.

(CORVALLIS) - Benton County public health officials announced Monday that Oregon State University Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory has confirmed a rabies-positive bat. The bat was found in the yard of a south Corvallis resident in the past week. The bat tested positive for rabies on Sept. 28th.

The case is still under investigation and so far, no domestic animal exposure has been identified. Rabies is a viral disease that is almost 100 percent fatal once symptoms begin.

Tuesday is The Deadline to Register For Third Annual Oregon Economic Forum

Former Oregon Gov. John Kitzhaber will deliver keynote speech at the University of Oregon event.

(EUGENE) - The third annual Oregon Economic Forum will focus on the growing problem of health care costs and the burden being placed on the competitiveness of Oregon's private employers.

Keynote speaker and former Oregon Gov. John Kitzhaber will describe a national model for health care reform. Kitzhaber founded the Archimedes Movement, which encourages engagement and effective action to improve the delivery of health care.

Hot Oil Blamed in Salem Kitchen Fire

(SALEM) - A Salem family got a quick lesson in how fast a kitchen fire can spread Monday night. Salem firefighters responded to a home at 4793 Lone Oak Rd. SE just after 8:30 PM, extinguishing a fire that started with overheated cooking oil.

Salem Fire's Chris Riffle says the resident, Mary Huwe, was cooking dinner for her 12-year old grandson when the oil she was heating became too hot, and created flames. The flames quickly leaped up the back of the stove and onto the ceiling of the kitchen. Mary and her grandson left the home as she called 9-1-1.

2-Alarm Fire at Salem Foundry

None of the five employees were in the building at the time. No injuries were reported.

(SALEM) - Salem Fire Department responded to a commercial fire at 1055 Hilfiker Dr SE at 7:34 PM Monday. The first alarm sent 3 Engines, 1 Ladder Truck, and a Battalion Chief.

First arriving firefighters reported that smoke was coming from the east, rear side of the building. Captain Paul Telfer reported that from the back side of the structure, flames could be seen on the interior of the building. A second alarm was called at 7:44 pm bringing additional resources to the fire.
