Homeless Families Saved by Salem’s Interfaith Hospitality Network

Since May 1999, a safe respite for homeless families needing shelter, food, transportation, and much needed emotional support has been tucked away on the quiet Edgewater Street in West Salem.

(SALEM) - Tucked away off Edgewater Street in west Salem is a nondescript two-story house with a nice shade tree in the front yard. The backyard has easily accessible parking spaces. It is unpretentious. The sign in the front yard gives a clue as to what is inside but it is usually ignored by those passing by.

Governor Announces Support For Nation`s First Commercial Wave Energy Project

Ocean Power Technologies has received a preliminary permit from the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) to develop a project off Reedsport. The company now must develop an application for a long-term license to install power-generation buoys offshore.

(SALEM) - Oregon Governor Ted Kulongoski announced Monday his support for what will be the nation’s first offshore wave energy project near Reedsport.

"I want Oregon to launch a new wave of alternative energy development, and I mean that literally," the Governor said. "By tapping the energy of ocean waves, we can move Oregon toward national leadership in renewable energy technology. Oregon’s investment in energy security will mean a healthier environment, a more reliable supply of home-grown energy, and good jobs for our state."

Leadership for a Change Tour Rolls Onward

(SALEM) - Colonel Mark Bontrager (USAF Retired) joined the Paul Evans for Oregon Senate campaign this weekend for door-to-door canvassing, meeting voters throughout the community, and participating in a "friend-raiser" in Independence.

"I flew out this weekend to help Paul campaign for the Oregon Senate. He was a good officer and he'll be a solid legislator," Bontrager explained to a voter while canvassing. "Paul told me straight up, I want to go home and serve my community. He was true to his word. I like it when someone makes a decision and sticks to it. We need more people like him."

Food-Stamp Recipients Receive Annual Increase this Month

For a family of four receiving the maximum benefit, the food-stamp benefit increases by $12 from $506 a month to $518.

(SALEM) - Oregon's 221,000 food-stamp households will receive small increases this month in the amount of their benefit and in how much they can earn to qualify. The changes, affecting about 431,000 people, became effective Sunday, Oct. 1st.

Governor Praises Congressional Action to Support Nanotechnology

Bill also provides federal funding for Northwest Manufacturing Initiative.

(SALEM) - Oregon Governor Ted Kulongoski praised the efforts of the state’s U.S. Senators in passing a defense appropriation that support projects in Oregon that involve nanotechnology, one of several requests the Governor submitted to the state’s congressional delegation for federal support of key projects in Oregon.

Nanotechnology is the development and use of devices that have a size of only a few nanometers, which is smaller than many molecules.

Bogus Report Leads to Arrest of Salem Security Guard

Police do not know what compelled the guard to initiate a false report.

(SALEM) - Salem Police responded in force to Kettle Foods in Salem on a report of two men menacing a security guard with a gun and threatening his life.

The 1:50 AM report and call for help from security guard Raymond Scott White, 22, brought response from 11 Salem units and two county sheriff deputies.

Salem Police say a perimeter was immediately set up and K-9's were brought in to search for the two subjects with a gun that White had reported.

World Will Take to the Streets Thursday to Protest Bush Administration

Organizers say the administration is not taking care of its people as it wages war around the world.

(SALEM) - People all over the world who are distressed over the Bush administration will band together by the millions Thursday in Salem, Portland, McMinnville, Bend and Milton-Freewater.

Local organizers say the event is an opportunity for people who are concerned for the welfare of their nation.

Fire Safety in Home Heating is a Priority as Weather Cools

During the last five years, fires involving heating sources, including woodstoves, portable, baseboard and wall heaters were responsible for 2,891 fires causing 11 fatalities and 59 injuries to Oregonians.

(SALEM) - Days are shorter, evenings are cooler and Oregon households are beginning to turn up the heat. Oregon State Fire Marshal Nancy Orr reminds Oregonians chimney fires and combustibles left too close to a heat source are the state's two leading fire causes in heating related fires.

These types of fires are easily prevented by keeping chimneys cleaned and remembering to keep combustibles such as furniture, blankets and clothing far away from heaters, woodstoves and similar heat sources.

Death Investigation Near Central Point Continues

(CENTRAL POINT) - Investigators are releasing the photograph of 47-year old Darin Lynn Drake, a of homicide victim whose body was discovered Friday morning in a field about 100 feet west
of Interstate 5 near the Central Point interchange.

Investigators hope the photograph release will help the public with providing information related to this investigation.

The "Enemy Combatant Bill" strips detainees of the right to appeal, broadens the President's unilateral powers to decide who is an enemy and which interrogation methods violate the Geneva Conventions, and fatally undermines the War Crimes Act.

The U.S. Constitution is now well on its way toward becoming an unrecognizable document. The controversy behind the president's "Enemy Combatants Bill" is one that will never go away or be silenced.
