Wind Fans Two Grass Fires in Salem

No injuries resulted from the two fires.

(SALEM) - The Salem Fire Department responded to a high-risk grass fire at 11:32 PM on Sunday at 6394 Skyline Dr. S. Salem Fire's Chris Riffle says firefighters arrived to find a rapidly spreading grass fire that threatened livestock and a barn.

Firefighters aggressively used foam and water to extinguish the fire and prevented it from spreading to any other nearby properties.

DEQ Completes Clean Water Plan For Willamette Watershed

The plan is required because portions of the Willamette River and its tributaries do not meet water quality standards for mercury, temperature, and bacteria.

(SALEM) - The Oregon DEQ has issued its clean water plan for the Willamette River watershed. The Willamette Basin Total Maximum Daily Load (TMDL) Order signed by DEQ Water Quality Administrator Lauri Aunan requires pollution sources to implement actions to improve water quality.

Through this, the DEQ expects to reduce mercury with a goal of removing fish consumption advisories; protect people from bacteria during water contact recreation; and protect threatened and endangered fish species.

Mid-Valley Curbside Food Drive Now Underway

It's a disturbing irony that, in the agriculturally rich Willamette Valley, the fastest-growing harvest is hunger.

(SALEM) - During the recycle weeks in October, Mid-Valley Garbage/Recycle Haulers will be collecting non-perishable food donations at residential curbs for the 10th year in a row.

Garbage haulers will distribute food drive bags along with 2007 recycle week calendars. Residents are urged to fill the bag with non-perishable food items, tie the bag shut, and place it curbside on their regularly scheduled recycle day in October only.

Corvallis Transit System Offering Free Rides All This Week

The Albany Transit System, the Linn-Benton Loop, and the Philomath Connection are also participating by offering free rides throughout the week.

Former Salem High School Basketball Coach Indicted on Child Pornography Charges

The original case filed in Marion County Circuit Court will be dismissed now that the case has been indicted federally as part of a new federal initiative known as Project Safe Childhood.

(PORTLAND) - Former South Salem High School basketball coach Rodney Howard was indicted by a federal grand jury Friday for transporting child pornography and possession of child pornography.

The DA’s office says AOL discontinued Howard’s Internet account because they suspected it was being used to traffic contraband.

A search warrant was obtained to recover the original computers which contained the child pornography.

Governor Assures Oregonians Local Spinach is Safe

Distributors across the country recalled bagged spinach from grocery stores several weeks ago after an E-coli outbreak. Oregon health officials, however, have deemed locally grown spinach safe to eat.

(SALEM) - Because of the national recall of bagged spinach from farms in California, Governor Kulongoski Friday encouraged Oregonians to buy and eat spinach grown in Oregon.

Speeding Driver Arrested for Possession of Several Types of Illegal Drugs

Police say that up to eight different illegal substances were located after the 19-year old consented to a search of her car.

(SALEM) - A construction zone speed-related traffic stop early Friday morning on Interstate 5 in Salem led to the arrest of a 19-year old Roseburg woman on numerous drug charges.

The arrest came after an Oregon State Police trooper and his trained drug dog "Reggie" located several different types of illegal drugs and cash in the car.

Friday morning at approximately 1:15 AM, Oregon State Police Senior Trooper Joseph Delgreco stopped a northbound 2003 Volkswagon Jetta on Interstate 5 near milepost 256, for traveling 78 mph in a 50 mph work zone area.
