Alleged Intoxicated Driver Charged With Swiping Baby Seal From Oregon Beach

Senior Oregon State Police Trooper Scott Salisbury transported the seal pup that evening to the aquarium and released it to a staff member.

(FLORENCE) - OSP troopers and Florence police found more than an intoxicated driver September 17th, when a seal pup was discovered in a vehicle stopped in Florence. The driver was arrested for DUII and Unlawful Possession of Wildlife.

On Sunday, September 17th at about 4:00 PM, OSP Fish & Wildlife Trooper Scott Salisbury located the driver that was in possession of a seal pup.

Triple Fatal Crash Near Sunriver Under Investigation (UPDATE)

Police have identified the three men who died when their SUV suddenly veered into the path of an oncoming semi.

(SUNRIVER) - Oregon State Police troopers are on scene of a fatal traffic crash on Highway 97 south of Sunriver. The highway remains closed and a detour is allowing traffic to get around the scene.

(WASHINGTON, D.C.) - U.S. Senators Ron Wyden and Gordon Smith today announced that defense-related projects in Oregon will receive significant new funding for Oregon nanotechnology projects and for the research and development of new medical, energy and other technologies with the potential for both defense and commercial applications.

The funds are included in the FY2007 Defense appropriations conference report, which passed today; it now moves to the President for his signature.

New War Cost Broken Down by State, City, Congressional District

(NORTHAMPTON, Mass.) - With the Senate´s passage today of $70 billion in new war spending, the total amount spent or allocated for the Iraq War has now reached $378 billion, according to the National Priorities Project (NPP).

In its new publication, Cost of Iraq War Rises Higher, NPP provides taxpayer breakdowns of this total for all states, congressional districts and hundreds of cities across the country.

Each publication also provides the number of U.S. soldiers killed and wounded from each state and a summary presentation of how the Iraq War has undermined U.S. national security.

Domestic Violence Calls Keep Salem Police Jumping

Police work can come in rushes like any other profession or industry. The added challenge was met with success tonight.

(SALEM) - Two domestic violence calls, reports of missing children and a car chase kept Salem Police officers moving at a good place Thursday night, and sirens could be heard wailing throughout the city as officers moved from one location to the other.

Salem Police Lt. John Hoffmeister says the first domestic violence report involved a man and woman fighting in the street near the old State Farm building in the 400 block of State St.

Just after 9:30 PM, reports came in through 911 indicating that the woman had jumped on the car at one point, and then the man reportedly tried to run her over.

Chemeketa Offering Free Tuition to Dependents of Fallen Oregon Military Personnel Since 9-11

In addition to fallen Oregon military personnel, the package has benefits for Chemeketa employees and students who are called to active duty and for Oregon veterans who were disabled as a result of military service since Sept. 11th, 2001.

(SALEM) - Chemeketa Community College Board of Education has approved free tuition for dependents of Oregon military personnel who have died on duty since Sept. 11th, 2001.

The free-tuition benefit is part of a package labeled “Chemeketa’s Response to 9/11.” Craig Smith, vice president and chief financial officer, told the board the package was in response to the question, “What can we do as a college for those who have made these sacrifices?”

University of Oregon Projects Increased Number of Freshmen to Attend This Year

New freshmen enrollment at the U of O is expected to exceed 3,100.

(EUGENE) - University of Oregon officials expect final tallies to show that more than 3,100 freshmen will start their studies at the university this fall.

This number is up by nearly 100 students from the previous year.

"While the number of freshmen is expected to increase dramatically, the total enrollment should remain well within the university's goals for managing growth at a level that allows us to serve students well," said Martha Pitts, director of admissions.
