Be Aware! Expect Lane Closures in Downtown Salem This Week

The closures is for crews who will be cleaning the downtown skybridges.

(SALEM) - The City of Salem Public Works Department wants you to Be Aware! of some lane closures taking place this week in downtown Salem.

Beginning Monday crews will be cleaning the downtown skybridges from 3:00 AM to 7:00 AM. All work is expected to be competed by Thursday.

Volunteers Sought to Patrol Area Parks

(SALEM) - The City of Salem Parks Department Volunteer Park Patrol applications are now being accepted for Minto-Brown Island Park Patrol and Cascades Gateway Park Patrol.

Volunteers walk, jog, bicycle and exercise their dogs as they keep our parks healthy and safe.

Being a park patrol member is a fun way to enjoy nature and get exercise, and the flexible scheduling fits almost every one.

Police Seeking Driver in Deadly Hit And Run

An Oregon State Police dispatcher on her way home from work found the man lying in the road.

(WOODBURN) - Woodburn police are asking for the public’s help in locating a vehicle that was involved in a deadly hit and run accident early Sunday morning in Woodburn.

Police believe the incident occurred somewhere between 2:15 AM and 2:30 AM on Highway 99E at James Street. A 48-year-old Hispanic man was killed in the incident.

Salem Police Department to Hold Landlord/Tenant Training Class

The class is an excellent opportunity for all landlords looking to improve their properties.

(SALEM) - The Salem Police Department Community Response Team will be holding a Fall Landlord/Tenant Training Class will be held Saturday October 21st, at the Salem Public Library's Loucks Auditorium.

The class will run from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM and will feature officers from the Salem Police Department and John Campbell from Campbell Delong Resources, Inc.

Investigators Return to Logging Site to Search For More Human Remains

The Lincoln City Sheriff’s office says a skull found by loggers could be connected to one of 70 missing persons cases.

(LINCOLN CITY) - Investigators this weekend began combing through a logging site searching for more human remains or clues as to the identity of a skull found by loggers working just outside Lincoln City over a week ago.

They have not ruled out the possibility that the remains belong to missing BYU student Brooke Wilberger.

Governor Announces Manufacturing Productivity, Workforce Preparation Grant

The Governor said the $500,000 investment will increase workforce competitiveness in Oregon.

(SALEM) - Governor Kulongoski has announced grants of $499,962 to strengthen partnerships in workforce training. The grants will go to the Northwest High Performance Enterprise Consortium to increase manufacturing productivity, cost savings, and workforce preparation.

Oregon Resubmits Growth Model Pilot Project Plan

Under the Oregon growth model proposal, the state would allow the use of a growth factor based on the progress of each individual student, as an additional measure in the current AYP calculation.

(SALEM) - State Schools Superintendent Susan Castillo has resubmitted Oregon’s revised application to participate in the Growth Model Pilot Project announced by Secretary of Education Margaret Spellings.

Oregon was one of 8 states allowed to resubmit, and if the state is approved, the model would use Oregon’s 2006-07 test data and rate schools on the Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) report in the fall of 2007.

Coast Guard Conducting Yaquina Head Lighthouse Study

The Coast Guard is examining the need of the lighthouse and it’s aid to navigation.

(NEWPORT) - The Coast Guard is conducting a study of the Yaquina Head Lighthouse focusing on the need for an active federal aid to navigation based on waterborne commerce, marine casualty information, port/harbor resources, emergency response plans, routine and emergency communication capabilities, and future development projects.

Currently the Bureau of Land Management owns the lighthouse structure.

Flinn Block Mall Announces Grand Re-Opening After Fire

(ALBANY) - The Flinn Block retail mall announced today its grand re-opening will take place on Friday, September 29th, with a ribbon cutting ceremony in front of the building at 10:00 AM.

The mall has been closed since the fire that took place in the Thai Tip restaurant portion of the building on August 16th, 2006. This fire, widely reported by television, radio and print media in the Willamette Valley, was caused by failure of a cord to an appliance in the restaurant.
