Marion, Linn County Backyard Burning Ban to be Extended

The open burning ban that goes into effect Oct. 1st encompasses the following communities in Linn and Marion counties: Detroit, Gates, Lyons, Mill City, Stayton, Scio, Sublimity, Silverton and Drake's Crossing.

(SALEM) - The current ban on backyard debris burning in the North Cascade Forest Protection District instituted by the Oregon Department of Environmental Quality to preserve air quality will expire at 12:01 AM on Oct. 1st.

But the Oregon Department of Forestry announced Monday that it will continue the prohibition on open burning after that date due to wildfire danger.

House Fire Blamed on Electrical Short

Salem firefighters had just cleared a call for an apartment fire.

(SALEM) - Linda Filley was working on her computer when she heard a noise outside. She discovered that the side of her house was on fire. She woke up her husband and they quickly evacuated their home.

Salem Fire Department received the call for an apartment fire early Monday morning at 790 Bieber Street NE. The call came in at 1:58 AM. The first alarm sent 3 Engines, 1 Ladder Truck, and a Battalion Chief, most of which had just been on scene at a Salem apartment fire.

Investigators Say 5-Year Old Started Apartment Fire

Investigators say the boy was playing with a candle. Damage was extimated at $80k but nobody was injured.

(SALEM) - Clark David and his wife Jennifer were sound asleep when they were awakened by their smoke detector going off. Jennifer David went to see if the candle they left lit had set the smoke detector off, when she discovered the fire in her boy's bedroom.

Clark David stated that he saw the fire in the top bunk bed when he entered his son's bedroom. He attempted to extinguish the fire, but the fire was too big.

Salem Fire Called Out to Multiple Fires Overnight

Salem Fire crews were kept busy moving from one fire to the next early Monday morning.

(SALEM) - Salem Fire Department teams rolled out at 12:34 AM Monday morning to an apartment fire at 3672 Beverly Avenue NE.

Initial reports indicated that flames were observed shooting out downstairs bedroom window. Crews were still on scene at 2:00 AM.

Juveniles Arrested After Haz Mat Incident Revealed Stolen Material

(KEIZER) - Officers from the Keizer Police Department and Keizer Fire Department responded to a reported spill of an unknown substance along the stretch of Willow Lake RD N at about the 1100 block.

Upon arrival, it was determined that the spill was much bigger then was initially reported and it covered about a three block stretch of roadway and because it was airborne, it continued to disperse over a larger area.

I-5 Backed up at Wilsonville

Anyone heading toward Portland should jump onto 99E to avoid a stopped freeway.

(WILSONVILLE) - The northbound lanes of Interstate 5 are at a stop due to an apparent van fire. Anyone heading north toward the city of Portland should take Highway 99 E to avoid the area.

Our understanding is that emergency crews are on scene.

Free Workshop Will Teach You How to Build a Rain Garden

A rain garden is an innovative stormwater technique used in many cities around the Pacific Northwest to help lessen urban stormwater pollution.

(SALEM) - A workshop on how to build rain gardens takes place Thursday, from 7:00 PM to 8:30 PM, at the City of Salem Water Resources Section of the Public Works Department.

It is being held in conjunction with the Marion Soil and Water Conservation District and The Friends of the Straub Environmental Learning Center.

Patient Reported on Unauthorized Leave from State Hospital`s Salem Campus (UPDATE)

(SALEM) - Many girls and boys will be sexually abused prior to their 18th birthday. The offenders will typically be someone they already know - perhaps a relative, friend, neighbor or one of the many volunteers and professionals who come in contact with them every day.

Few offenders are caught because they work just as hard deceiving adults as they do seducing and silencing their child victims.
