(SALEM) - When given this assignment to cover the fourth annual Diversity Walk at the Oregon State Hospital, I had no idea what to expect. I was very pleasantly surprised. It was a diversity walk through different countries via booths set up with food, pictures, and cultural items.

The hope of the individuals who created the Diversity Walk is to have it grow each year with more countries represented. Information is given to the patients encouraging them to participate.

Coastal Caucus Helps Secure Additional $500,000 for Salmon Fishermen

Subcommittee Approves Funds, Full Emergency Board To Finalize Plan Friday.

(SALEM) - Sen. Joanne Verger (D-Coos Bay), chair of the Oregon Legislature’s Coastal Caucus, announced today that the state would be providing $500,000 in additional emergency funds for Oregon fishermen. The new appropriation, which was approved this morning by the General Government Subcommittee of the Emergency Board, brings the total amount of state relief to $1,000,000.

“Throughout the summer, we have worked closely with the Governor and our fellow legislators to provide meaningful relief for coastal fishermen and their families,” said Verger.

92 percent of all Oregon Christmas trees leave the state, with the number one export market being Mexico.

(SALEM) - Results of a new survey confirm that Oregon is tops when it comes to growing Christmas trees:

"We are the big player both domestically and internationally. It's not surprising to see that Oregon is still number one and growing. So, getting bigger all the time."

Bryan Ostlund of the Pacific Northwest Christmas Tree Growers Association says the survey- done every two years- helps the industry make proper planting decisions based on supply and demand.

Oregon Hunters Take Note: Wildfire Threat Remains High Throughout The State

Oregon hunters have a solid track record when it comes to fire safety in the woods. Over the past 10 years, hunter-caused fires accounted for only one percent of the total acres burned on lands protected by the Oregon Department of Forestry.

(SALEM) - As hunters head out in coming days, they should keep fire precaution in mind.

Even as fall and rain approaches, officials warn, forests in many parts of the state remain very dry, and the danger of starting a wildfire persists.

Just as the seasonal transition occurs almost imperceptibly, so do wildfire season and hunting season often overlap. On an early morning in September, fire seems an unlikely visitor to the forest.

Police to Hold Presentation on Oregon Traffic Safety Laws in Spanish

Keizer police say traffic enforcement is only one of several important components of traffic safety to keep Oregon roadways safe.

(KEIZER) - The Keizer Police Department will be presenting a free community presentation in Spanish on Oregon traffic laws, including information on obtaining an Oregon Driver’s License, as part of the educational component to seek voluntary compliance in reducing dangerous driving behavior and motor vehicle crashes.

The class will cover the basic rules of the road, the most commonly observed traffic violations, the most dangerous driving behaviors and information on how to prepare for the licensing test.

The class is free and registration is not required.

Acclaimed Author to Speak on Citizen Responsibility and Empowerment

(SALEM, Oregon) - Author Paul Loeb will give a free public lecture on citizen responsibility Oct. 3rd at 7:30 PM in Cone Chapel at Willamette University.

Loeb will discuss how people can make their voices heard and their actions count in working for change. He will explain how to act on one’s deepest beliefs and make a difference despite obstacles.

Loeb has spent more than 30 years researching and writing about citizen responsibility and empowerment, asking what makes some people choose lives of social commitment while others abstain.

Sport Anglers May no Longer Retain Cabezon

(NEWPORT ) - Sport boat anglers may not retain cabezon after 11:59 p.m. Friday, Sept. 22. Fishing for other bottomfish – such as most rockfish species, lingcod and greenling – remains open.

Cabezon harvest in Oregon has been limited in recent years by the Oregon Fish and Wildlife Commission because health of the stock is uncertain.

Landing data for the sport fishery indicates that anglers will meet the ocean boat harvest cap of 15.8 metric tons for cabezon. Anglers also reached the harvest cap in 2004 and 2005. This year, anglers were able to fish for cabezon almost six weeks longer than last year.

Corrections Officer Charged Over Alleged Relationship with Inmate

Based in Wilsonville at Coffee Creek, James Price had been with state Corrections for four years.

(SALEM) - A state corrections officer has been arrested for an alleged 3-month long relationship with a female inmate.
