Cost of War in Iraq Has Cost Salem Taxpayers Over $97 Million

The Cost of Iraq War calculator is set to reach $318.5 billion by September 30th, the end of fiscal year 2006.

(SALEM) - The Salem taxpayer cost for the Iraq War stands at over $97 million dollars as of Sunday.

In Marion County the taxpayer cost is over $210 million, Polk County over $48 million, Linn County over $70 million, and Yamhill County over $68 million.

600 Pound Cow Recovered After Plunging 24 Feet Into a Well - Photos

The owners say they aren't sure whether they should name the newly purchased Angus Miracle or Jessica.

(CANBY) - A cow that fell nearly twenty five feet into a well, kept Canby firefighters and a support team busy for several hours on Sunday. Crews were called to 2742 SE Territorial Road, in Canby at 10:30 this morning.

When crews arrived they were directed into the location by the cow's owners, Tony and Bev Pezl. Canby Firefighters found that the 600 pound Angus Cow had broken through a series of railroad ties, then fallen into the well.

Recovery Fair – Event at Bush Park

Recovery from addictions and mental illness were the main topics at this event with an over abundance of positive energy and hope for the community.

(SALEM) - The message of recovery was emphasized by visitors picking a stone from each vendor booth. These stones depicted the soul of recovery: willingness, integrity, serenity, spiritual, brotherly love, honesty, celebrate, justice, love, hope, courage, faith.

Words to most, but to those in recovery they represent a lifeline to sobriety, mental well being, and acceptance.

Claudia Wilcox with the Addictions and Mental Health Division informed me this event was in celebration of Recovery Month and was the first event in Salem for the recovery process. This event recognizes the people and their families who are taking steps towards recovery from addictions and mental illness.

Michelle Thomas, a person who has been in recovery since 1985, says this event is all about the families as they go through recovery and are soon able to look through the dark.

Elections Officials Expect Between 20 to 30 Percent Voter Turnout For Salem Special Annexation Election

(SALEM) - Ballots are slowly trickling in at the Marion County Elections Division for Tuesday’s Salem special annexation election.

Voters are being asked to approve 35 city council-initiated annexations throughout the city.

Marion County Election Supervisor Sharon Ricks says she is expecting a 30 percent voter turnout, while Marion County Elections Clerk Bill Burgess expects only a 20 percent turnout.

(WASHINGTON, D.C.) - In advance of the Global Day for Darfur on Sunday, Senators Gordon Smith (R-OR) and Edward Kennedy (D-MA) announced their bipartisan plan to implement the Darfur Peace Agreement and help alleviate the suffering in the region.

The bill is the first legislation introduced in Congress after the Government of Sudan signed the Darfur Peace Agreement on May 5th.

Alert Remains on for E. coli Outbreak

(WASHINGTON D.C.) - The U.S. Food and Drug Administration is continuing to alert consumers about an outbreak of E. coli O157:H7 in multiple states that may be associated with the consumption of fresh spinach and fresh spinach containing-products.

Based on current information, FDA advises that people not eat fresh spinach or fresh spinach containing-products that are consumed raw.

Individuals who believe they may have experienced symptoms of illness after consuming pre-packaged spinach are urged to contact their health care provider.

Oregon State Students Build Wind-Powered Water Heater

The prototype is about the size of a phone booth and topped with a wind turbine made from a 50-gallon steel drum.

(CORVALLIS) - Engineering students from OSU, inspired by a late professor’s rudimentary sketches, has designed a working prototype of a hot water heating system powered solely by the wind.

The students believe the technology, using magnets, a copper plate and plenty of ingenuity, has the potential to birth a new company and make an impact on the way the world heats water, especially in developing countries.
