Death Investigation Underway at Oregon State Penitentiary

63-year-old John Richards was serving a 100-month sentence for first degree sexual penetration from Lane County.

(SALEM ) - The Oregon State Police and Marion County District Attorneys Office are investigating the death of an inmate at Oregon State Penitentiary in Salem Wednesday night.

Oregon Department of Corrections spokeswoman Perrin Damon says 63-year-old inmate John Richards, 63, was discovered by a correctional officer in his double cell in a general population housing unit.

Police Identify Woman Killed After Train Collides With Truck in Polk County

At the intersection where the accident occurred, there were train crossing signs, but no signal gates.

(INDEPENDENCE) - A Willamette & Pacific Railroad engine struck a mini-truck early Thursday morning neat the intersection of Corvallis Rd and Stapleton Rd.

Polk County Fire District No. 1 spokesman Jason Cane says the single engine was heading southbound when it collided with the mini-truck around 6:13 AM.

Governor Announces Plan to Fully Fund Head Start

(PORTLAND) - In remarks delivered during the launch of the “Ready for School” campaign, Governor Kulongoski announced his commitment to provide full funding for Oregon Head Start, which is a key feature of his Education Enterprise.

“Oregon Head Start Pre-kindergarten programs are some of the most important tools we have for closing the achievement gap and leveling the playing field for all children,” the Governor said.

Sheriff’s Office Holding Citizens Police Academy This Fall

The academy is free of charge and is open to adults eighteen years of age and older.

(SALEM) - The Marion County Sheriff’s Office will be holding a Citizens Police Academy this fall.

Training dates will be October 28th, November 4th, 11th, and 18th.

Each day will consist of approximately eight hours of training in various facets of law enforcement which include: an overview of the criminal justice system, community policing, patrol procedures...

Op-Ed: Strike Force Police and Meth as a Political Campaign Issue

More money for more strike force cops and more arrests, more people in jail, more kids in an overcrowded foster care system, all in the fight against Meth, but who is being served? I've seen the Republican meth fighters come to a meth house before, once. They stayed long enough to have their pictures taken and do a couple of interviews, then it was off to lunch and bigger and better things.

(SALEM) - Despite the fanfare and talk, we're nowhere close to solving the meth problem here in Oregon.

Winters Leads Kick-off For Anti-Meth Task Force Fundraising Effort

(SALEM) - State Senator Jackie Winters (R-Salem)kicked off an Anti-Meth Task Force fundraising effort at the Grand Ballroom Wednesday that she says involves interests from all levels of government and the private sector.

“Today, we come together to say with one loud and strong voice; meth has no place in our neighborhoods,” stated Winters. “One in three people in Marion County are adversely affected by methamphetamine and it is my hope that we are turning the corner towards a better tomorrow for them.”

The goal of the event was to pool the financial resources of the business community to help create a strike force made up of law enforcement agencies across the county.
