Inmate Autopsy Indicates Death by Strangulation

The inmate, John L. Richards, had a projected release date of October 10th, 2012.

(SALEM) - The Oregon State Police and Marion County Homicide/Assault Response Team are investigating the death of an inmate at Oregon State Penitentiary in Salem on Wednesday evening, September 13th.

At approximately 8:10 PM, Oregon State Penitentiary staff discovered 63-year old inmate John L. Richards unconscious in his double cell in a general population housing unit.

Medical staff and paramedics attempted to revive Richards, but he was pronounced dead at approximately 8:40 PM.

Wyden, Grassley, Senate Rules Committee Leaders Announce Offensive Against Secret Holds

(WASHINGTON D.C.) - U.S. Senators Ron Wyden (D-OR), Chuck Grassley (R-IA), Trent Lott (R-MS) and Chris Dodd (D-CT) today announced a new offensive against the Senate’s practice of secret holds, under which a single Senator can block legislation or a nominee without revealing his or her identity.

Wyden has worked with Grassley for more than a decade to end the practice of secret holds.

Their amendment requiring a Senator who places a hold to make it public within three days was included in the Senate version of lobbying reform legislation.

OSP Detective Assaulted, Suspect Arrested During Traffic Stop North of Salem

Adams reportedly attacked the Detective and they fell to the ground during the struggle.

(SALEM) - Oregon State Police say one of their detectives was assaulted and injured Wednesday night after stopping a reckless, intoxicated driver southbound on Interstate 5 about 1/4 mile south of Brooks.

The suspect was taken into custody with the assistance of other OSP troopers after a fight that they say lasted approximately 6-minutes.

(SALEM) - The Salem Fire Department reports that a rollover accident on the entrance ramp to the Center Street Bridge from Wallace Road is causing delays.

Salem Firefighter/Paramedic Willy Giddings said when they arrived just before 11:20 AM, a Jeep was lying on its side with the drivers side up.

A female was trapped inside the vehicle in her seat belt.

Salem firefighters extricated the female through the driver's door.

Lead Detected in Albany Drinking Water

Since 1992, the United States Environmental Protection Agency has required drinking water supplies to be tested periodically for the presence of lead and copper.

(ALBANY) - Routine testing of Albany's drinking water in June found elevated levels of lead in eight residences the City of Albany Public Works Department reports.

Albany conducted tests annually at 60 residences from 1992-1996 without detecting any lead above the amount allowed by EPA. From 1996 to June 2006, EPA reduced the City's testing schedule to 30 samples every three years, with no violations detected, according to Jim Young, Water Distribution Supervisor.

Matsutake Commercial Mushroom Harvests Now Underway in Oregon

Matsutake mushrooms appear to be sprouting early this year in Oregon and California national forests. Forest Service officials believe this year’s matsutake harvest will yield quantities not seen since the early 1990s.

(CRESCENT) - Permits to harvest matsutake mushrooms for commercial purposes are now on sale on the Deschutes, Fremont-Winema, Umpqua and Willamette National Forests.

The permit is valid on all four national forest until the season ends November 11th, and is required for anyone picking the mushrooms for commercial purposes.
