Officer Finds Body Burning Under 13th Street Bridge

The person died as a result of the fire. OSP and Salem police are continuing to investigate the incident.

(SALEM) - Salem police are investigating a body that was found on fire early Tuesday morning in the 500 block of 13th Street SE. Sgt. Mike Scanlon says at around 1:00 AM, an officer, while on a routine patrol, observed smoke and fire coming from an area located under a bridge.

As the officer approached the fire, he was able to determine that it was a person on fire.

Responding officers extinguished the fire but could determine that the person was deceased Scanlon said.

Commercial Fire in Salem Put Out Quickly by Fire Crews

Firefighters doused the flames within minutes, but no before they burned through a nearby power line.

(SALEM) - The owner of a store called Myrtlewood was working inside Tuesday when a neighbor alerted him to the fact that the side of his building was on fire. Charles Hardgrove quickly evacuated the building and had his neighbor call 9-1-1.

Salem Fire Department received the call for a commercial fire at 4120 Portland Road NE at 10:39 AM Tuesday. The first alarm sent 3 Engines, 1 Ladder Truck, and a Battalion Chief. First arriving fire fighters reported flames coming from the back portion of the building.

Firefighters were able to extinguish the fire within minutes of their arrival. The fire was contained to an attached shed that a large motor that ran a dust collection system was located.

Residents and business owners near the proposed club tell the city council that these types of clubs should be banned from all city neighborhoods.

Update on Fatal Officer-Involved Shooting Near Albany

An autopsy was completed Monday morning by Dr. Larry Lewman of the Oregon State Medical Examiner's Office.

(ALBANY) - The investigation into Friday afternoon's Oregon State Police officer-involved shooting that left one man with mortal wounds and a police officer with gunshot injuries is continuing. The Linn County District Attorney's Office and investigators have released some additional details.

Lincoln City Police Seek Hit and Run Driver

(LINCOLN CITY) - Lincoln City Police say they are looking for the driver of a blue Ford Explorer SUV driven by an adult female that was involved in a hit and run collision with a motorcyele Saturday at about 4:15 PM.

Investigators say the driver of the Explorer crashed into the back of a motorcycle that was ridden by Bryan Farmer of Lincoln County and his passenger, Hazel Farmer.

The crash happened in Highway 101 near Logan Road. The driver is reported to have stopped and told the crash victims that she was going to park her vehicle, but instead, she apparently left the scene driving westbound on NW 40th Street.

Large Labor Day Boating Crowds, Caution Urged

(SALEM) - Labor Day weekend is one of the top three boating weekends of the year at many Oregon waterbodies, and the Oregon State Marine Board warns boaters to be cautious where it's congested.

"Labor Day typically marks the end of the boating season and boaters will need to be courteous and patient in heavily used areas." says Ashley Massey, Public Affairs Specialist for the Marine Board. "There are plenty of great places to boat this holiday and we hope people get out and enjoy it *safely."

Marine officers will be out in force to assist boaters and keep the waterways safe. "The top violations this summer involve life jackets, boater education cards, boater registration, boat speed and alcohol," says Massey. She suggests the following checklist to stay safe and legal this Labor Day weekend:

DEQ Plans No Changes to Oregon Field Burning Regulations

Contrary to recent news reports, the Oregon Department of Environmental Quality has no plans to change the field burning program that minimizes smoke impacts from burning grass seed fields in the Willamette Valley.

(SALEM) - A proposed new federal standard to further limit the amount of air pollution allowed will have a big impact on Oregon, but not directly on field burning.

The field burning program is operated by the Oregon Department of Agriculture.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has proposed to tighten the standard for fine particulate because new evidence shows that these very small particles are trapped deep in the lungs where they do more damage than previously thought.

Salem-Keizer Residents Getting Fed-Up With Panhandlers

Authorities say the ever increasing number of individuals standing on street corners and off-ramps throughout the mid-valley begging for money is becoming a clear and present danger to their and the motoring public’s safety.

(SALEM) - No matter where you travel in Oregon, from Portland south to Ashland, or east to Ontario, or north along the Oregon Coast, somewhere along the way, you will run into an individual standing at an off-ramp or street corner holding a sign asking you to give them any spare change you may have.

Sgt Brian Prevett, who is in charge of the downtown Salem patrol team, deals with many of the panhandlers downtown on a day-by-day basis says the law is fairly clear in that panhandling is constitutionally protected and any law or ordinance against it would violate the Oregon constitution.

Forest Health Problems in Blue Mountains on Forestry Board

(SALEM) - Forest health problems in the Blue Mountains, managing wildfire risk in the forestland-urban interface, forestry education for urban residents, and indicators to gauge forest sustainability are among the items on the Oregon Board of Forestry's agenda when it meets Wednesday, Sept. 6th, in Salem.

The meeting will begin at 8:00 AM in the Tillamook Room in Building C at Oregon Department of Forestry headquarters, 2600 State St. The public is invited.

Department fire program staff will ask the board to accept the recommendations of an advisory committee for strengthening standards for maintenance of vacant lots under the Oregon Forestland-Urban Interface Fire Protection Act.
