Oregon Disaster Medical Team Deploys to Gulf Coast
Salem-News.comOregon residents respond to another national disaster, one that nearly marks the anniversary date of Hurricane Katrina.
(PORTLAND) - 
Members of the Oregon Disaster Medical Assistance Team (DMAT) will leave Oregon for the Gulf Coast region Tuesday, Aug. 29th, at 8:00 AM from Portland International Airport.
Oregon DMAT will join other federal disaster medical
teams preparing to assist in the response effort to Hurricane Ernesto. Eight team members are from Oregon Health & Science University.
Tuesday, Aug. 29th, is one year to the day that many of the team members pre-deployed to the Gulf Coast in response to Hurricane Katrina.

The Oregon Military Department has announced the promotion of Captain Scott Hildebrandt to the rank of Major and his selection as the Deputy to the Inspector General for the Oregon National Guard.
Hildebrandt has had a long career with the military, starting with his enlistment into the U.S. Army in 1988.
Upon his release he joined the National Guard and served in Pendleton and Baker City while attending Eastern Oregon University.

With the exception of the perseverance and hard work of the early settlers, nothing has had a greater impact on the development of the Pacific Northwest more than road building.
On the Oregon coast roads allowed access to even the most remote areas. No one knows this more than Pete Fiddler, a surveyor and highway engineer for more than forty years on the Pacific coast.
Fidler’s territory covered the area from Astoria to Yachats to Junction City. “ It was a young man’s job but I did it even when I wasn’t so young anymore,” said Fiddler, now 71, but looking so fit he could probably still do the job today.

The city of Hood River Oregon said goodbye to one of its own Saturday. Friends, family, active duty servicemen and veterans all joined together to recall the life of 28-year old Marc Lee, a young man who leaves many loved ones behind.
Marc was a Navy SEAL, one of the nation’s elite commandos that have been on the cutting edge when it comes to freedom and security, for decades. Marc was the first Navy SEAL to die in combat in Iraq.
When it comes to high level security and reconnaissance work, the Navy SEAL’s are among the best.

Law enforcement agencies in Oregon, in partnership with the Oregon Department of Transportation, are joining the National Highway and Transportation Safety Administration’s national impaired-driving enforcement blitz “Drunk Driving, Over the Limit, Under Arrest.”
Thousands Enjoy Ears and Ears of Fun at Aumsville Corn Festival on Saturday

Thousands came to Porter Boone Park on Saturday to enjoy hot buttered corn-on-the-cob, and more during the 38th Annual Aumsville Corn Festival.
Thousands lined the streets of Aumsville to watch a family-fun parade make it’s way through town.
This years Grand Marshal was Louis Bales, and there were over 100 entries in this year's parade.
Crews Make Some Progress This Weekend on Puzzle Fire

Fire crews were able to make some progress this weekend on the Puzzle Fire on the Willamette National Forest, two miles north of Marion Lake. The fire is now at 4,610 acres and is 10 percent contained.
The Northwest corner of the fire was the busiest place for firefighters Sunday. Additional spread of a slopover has effectively been prevented with the use of a heavy air tankers dropping retardant and helicopter bucket work.
Liberty Street Bridge Improvement Project Delayed (UPDATE)
Kevin Hays Salem-News.comWe've been notified that ODOT's contractor will not begin the Liberty Street Bridge Rehabilitation Project until September 6th or September 7th.

If you use Liberty Street SE to get to work, school, or downtown, Be Aware! that beginning in September, Liberty Street SE near City Hall will be reduced to two lanes of traffic while crews rehabilitate the bridge over Pringle Creek.
Salem Public Works spokesman Mike Gotterba says the bridge was built in 1928, and has settlement occurring in both the north and south bridge approach embankments.
Gotterba says they know this project is going to be a challenge not only for construction crews, but commuters as well.
Suspect in I-5 Officer Involved Shooting Dies (UPDATE)
Salem-News.comInvestigators have released the man's name who was shot and died during the August 25th incident. He is identified as 26-year old John Paul Tollver. According to investigators, Tolliver's last known residence was a boarding house in the State of Maryland.

Oregon State Police Criminal Investigations Division detectives, in conjunction with Linn County DA Office and Linn County Sheriffs Office, are continuing the investigation into Friday afternoon's officer-involved shooting on Interstate 5 northbound near milepost 236.
Oregon State Police spokesman Lt. Gregg Hastings says at 12:48 PM, OSP Trooper Russell Decker and Senior Trooper Huff Meyer initiated a high risk traffic stop on a black small car on the right shoulder.
During contact with the lone male occupant, shots were fired.
