Images From Oregon Guard Mission in Mongolia

Specialist April Dustin with the Oregon National Guard took these photos of Oregon soldiers on a training mission in Mongolia called Khan Quest 2006.

(MONGOLIA) - Oregon Army National Guard Soldiers from B Company, 2nd Battalion, 162nd Infantry, based out of Corvallis, have been participating in United Nations peacekeeping training for the last two weeks for Khaan Quest 2006 in Mongolia.

These photos feature Soldiers from our area training in Distribution Site procedures, in which they practice securing a site to distribute food items to crowd of villagers.

Porpoises Deluge Seaside Cove Area

Experts say Seaside should see more porpoises in the coming days.

(SEASIDE) - An abundance of small baitfish in the waters off the north Oregon coast has resulted in a huge deluge of gulls and pelicans in Seaside and Cannon Beach, as well as another unusual occurrence in the world
of nature.

Tuesday, staff at the Seaside Aquarium is reporting something like 100 harbor porpoises have gathered in the "cove area" of Seaside - at the southern end of town - to feed on the surge of wee fishies.

Seismic Survey Looks at Earthquake and Volcano Activity

Oregon is one of several states participating in the project that they hope will lead to increased safety in natural disasters.

(SALEM) - Oregon's Civil Air Patrol is working with the United States Geological Survey in a 6 state seismic survey event this coming weekend, August 25th-27th.

They are operating out of Willamette Aviation at the Aurora State Airport with 5 aircraft and up towards 50 people. They're also working with Civil Air Patrol wings out of California, Alaska, Hawaii, and Nevada.

Part of the work they will conduct includes photo and reconnaissance flights in both Washington and Oregon.

Salem Residents, Businesses, and City Leaders to Proposed Strip Club Owner; Thanks But No Thanks

City leaders, south Salem residents and business owners are fighting every which way they can to keep Salem from gaining an eighth strip club

(SALEM) - A proposed strip club in south Salem has neighbors and business owners seeing red, and they say they will fight the club’s owner from opening his doors in their family friendly neighborhood, even if they have to take their case all the way to the Oregon Supreme Court. The Salem City Council on Monday, voted to take the issue to a public hearing next Monday night.

A liquor license application board, chaired by city councilor Brad Nanke, found the following reasons why the city should deny the club’s liquor license.

Puzzle Fire Grows to Over 4,000 Acres

Congressman Greg Walden and State Representatives Chuck Burley and Gene Whisnant were briefed on the Cascade Crest Complex fires Tuesday.

(MARION FORKS) - The Puzzle Fire on the Willamette National Forest, two miles north of Marion Lake, which has grown to 4,305 acres, was flown and assessed Monday for tactical action.

Crews and overhead were assigned to the Puzzle Fire Tuesday to begin scouting for possible containment line to the north in Branch IV. In Branch III on the south side of the puzzle fire crews are beginning to open up trails and dozer line left over from the B&B Complex fire in 2003 for in indirect line.

(CANBY) - Early Tuesday morning, firefighters and paramedics from Canby Fire District responded to a possible childbirth, located at 650 SE 7th Place in Canby.

Initial dispatch information indicated that the "baby was coming out!"

When firefighters arrived just five minutes later, they found mom, dad, and baby upstairs in the hallway between the bedroom and bathroom.

Governor Unveils a New Community Tool to Fight Meth

New ‘Meth Toolkits’ are available to communities throughout the state.

(PORTLAND) - Governor Kulongoski Monday rolled-out the "Target Meth Oregon Toolkit," a new tool that can enable communities to take control of local neighborhoods and fight methamphetamine use and trafficking.

"Today, we’re presenting a ‘toolkit’ that communities can use to help people make a difference in the fight against meth," the Governor said. "In it, you’ll find information about community resources and programs for treatment and prevention. You’ll also find a list of prevention experts in each county."

Husband And Wife Lose Their Home in Fire

The Jefferson Volunteer Firefighter Association made a cash donation from their burn out fund to the Huebners' since this was designated as their home.

(JEFFERSON) - Jefferson Firefighters were called to a motorhome on fire at the northbound Santiam Rest Area on Interstate-5 near mile marker 241 at approximately 5:50 PM Monday.

Witnesses say the fire was already visible from the motor home's roof when 9-1-1 was called.

Jefferson fire spokeswoman Elaine Parrott says the 1998 40-foot Safari Serengeti Edition motor home is a total loss according to the owners, 76-year-old Robert and 62-year old Carol Heubner of Aloha.
